Director, Lead Field/ Network Engineer
You will be the senior technical authority who sets the culture for the stand-up of technical operations centers. You will build, train, and lead a small team. We are hiring an engineer who leads from the floor: someone who came up as a field technician, grew into design and architecture, and never lost hands-on ability.
Responsibilities
Leadership and Culture
- Set the technical and professional culture for a small engineering team.
- Provide technical direction, leadership, and training to less experienced staff.
- Complete complex assignments without direction and direct more junior engineers.
- Mentor and develop engineers across senior and mid tiers, building depth behind every critical skill.
- Build the team's operating rhythm: shift handoffs, escalation discipline, and documentation habits.
- Serve as technical liaison between the site and the appropriate technical business area for resolution of IT issues and system upgrades.
Field Engineering and Installation
- Perform the physical setup and configuration of desktop hardware and software, including external peripherals that may be required.
- Install applicable equipment, with racks if needed.
- Install and connect applicable cables.
- Perform onsite testing of equipment and coordinate with other engineers.
- Coordinate pick-up and delivery of equipment.
- Build workstations per established procedures.
Network and Infrastructure Operations
- Troubleshoot network connectivity issues.
- Troubleshoot desktop and network anomalies and contact the appropriate groups for additional support.
- Monitor server activities and provide technical support requiring expert knowledge and advanced technical principles.
- Maintain operational status of all telephonic infrastructure and systems.
- Manage software and hardware support as needed.
- Maintain access control by creating new user accounts, maintaining existing accounts, and troubleshooting user login and access issues.
Operations Center Stand-Up
- Lead rack, stack, cable, and commissioning work on the monitoring floor and staging lab.
- Give procedural input to the planning, preparation, and execution of all projects.
- Produce and maintain physical and logical network diagrams, architecture diagrams, and operational procedures.
- Support readiness reviews and operational acceptance testing.
Response and Availability
- Respond to and resolve technical issues after hours.
- Take part in the on-call rotation covering non-standard hours.
Requirements
Education
- Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Systems Engineering, or a related field; or if no degree, 8 to 10 years of related experience performing engineering functions on programs of similar size, scope, and complexity.
Experience
- At least 10+ years as an engineer directly supporting technical programs.
- Experience in IP related services: TCP/IP.
- Experience installing and maintaining Cisco routers and switches.
- Experience with UPS systems and AC/DC power systems, to include installation and connection.
- Working knowledge of CAT 5 and CAT 6 cable and connectors, with demonstrated capability of fabricating required equipment.
- Knowledge of fiber, servers, routers, edge switches, and desktop hardware.
- Experience using Remedy, Visio, and MS Office.
- Demonstrated experience standing up a site, data center, network operations center, or equivalent facility from empty space to operational.
- 2 or more years of people leadership experience, formal supervision or sustained technical team lead.
Additional Required Qualifications
- Due to nature of the work the candidate must be a U.S. citizen, able to pass a background investigation (criminal, employment, education).
- Physical capability to lift and mount equipment and work under raised floors.
- Full-time onsite presence; this is not a remote or hybrid role.
- As needed – up to 25% within the continental United States, in staggered deployment waves.
Desired Skills
