Director, GTO Digital Transformation

AstraZeneca · Gaithersburg, MD · 5 days ago
Full-time

Lead the day-to-day delivery of priority digital transformation initiatives within the GTO digital portfolio. Convert portfolio priorities into executable delivery plans, coordinate matrixed contributors, strengthen governance and delivery field, and provide portfolio management support to the Senior Director, GTO Digital Transformation.

About the role

The initial anchor program for this role is the Biologics workstream within the OPS2030 Digital Tech Transfer initiative, including associated pilots and scale-readiness activities. Over time, the role may also support other GTO digital initiatives requiring senior delivery leadership, transformation field, and cross-functional coordination.

Responsibilities

  • Digital Initiative Delivery
    • Lead day-to-day delivery of assigned GTO digital initiatives, beginning with the Biologics Digital Tech Transfer workstream and growing to other priority initiatives as portfolio needs evolve.
    • Own planning, execution, achievement tracking, risk management, dependency management, and readiness for scale for assigned pilots and workstreams.
    • Convert priorities established by the Senior Director and governance teams into executable delivery plans, achievements, decision points, and blocking issue pathways.
    • Ensure Biologics requirements are represented across Development, Commercial, Alexion, and site perspectives for the initial DTT anchor program.
    • Partner with Data, Architecture, IT, PMO, Enterprise Data Office, and other capability teams to support foundations, domain models, semantic layers, integrations, and governance needs.
  • Portfolio Management Support
    • Manage portfolio tracking, delivery cadence, status reporting, dependency views, and governance materials on behalf of the Senior Director.
    • Develop clear program and governance updates that proactively surface risks, blockers, decision needs, and resource gaps.
    • Maintain intake subject area and roadmap updates while recognizing that prioritization, scope approval, and trade-off decisions remain with the Senior Director.
  • Financial and Delivery Management
    • Own forecast versus actual spend, accruals, cross-charges, vendor and purchase order status, and budget risks for assigned initiatives and workstreams.
    • Maintain project and task tracking for breakthroughs, risks, actions, dependencies, resource demand, and delivery readiness.
    • Report financial and delivery status on a defined cadence without requiring repeated follow-up.
  • Transformation and Future-State Build
    • Advance simplification, automation, AI-enabled workflows, knowledge retention, and scalable future-state ways of working.
    • Convert transformation opportunities into pilots, use cases, business capabilities, delivery plans, and measurable outcomes.
    • Help move programs beyond simple digitization toward redesigned, data-enabled, and AI-ready tech transfer processes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Life Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biotechnology, Information Systems, Data Science, Business, or a related field.
  • Minimum 10+ years of experience in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, manufacturing, technical operations, digital transformation, program delivery, or related areas.
  • Demonstrated experience leading complex, matrixed digital transformation programs in manufacturing, technical operations, tech transfer, process development, MS&T, quality, data, or other regulated environments.
  • Strong program and project management capabilities with the ability to lead teams and workstreams without direct line authority.
  • Strong financial management skills, including experience with forecasts, actual spend, accruals, vendor status, purchase orders, cross-charges, and delivery tracking.
  • Understanding of technical operations and digital transformation in regulated environments.
  • Strong customer management, facilitation, executive communication, risk management, and escalation skills.
  • Collaborative, low-ego operating style with the ability to work effectively within a defined role scope while providing senior delivery leadership.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree such as MBA, MS, PhD, PharmD, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience in Biologics tech transfer lifecycle, including drug substance, drug product, analytical, manufacturing readiness, and quality/regulatory considerations.
  • Experience with enterprise data strategy, domain modeling, semantic technologies, ontologies, data governance, knowledge management, or digital manufacturing platforms.
  • Experience with AI, GenAI, analytics, automation, digital manufacturing, or Industry 4.0 initiatives in regulated environments.
  • Experience partnering with PMO, Enterprise Data, Architecture, IT, consulting partners, and cross-functional business teams.

Success Measures

  • Assigned digital initiatives are delivered with clear ownership, governance, cadence, risk management, and readiness for scale.
  • Biologics requirements are consistently represented across Development, Commercial, Alexion, site, data, architecture, and enterprise program forums.
  • Spend, resource demand, vendor and purchase order status, milestones, risks, and dependencies are proactively tracked and reported.
  • Sponsor capacity is increased by shifting day-to-day delivery leadership for assigned initiatives to this role while strategic and enterprise accountability remains with the Senior Director.
  • Programs advance beyond status-quo digitization toward simplified, data-enabled, and AI-ready future-state tech transfer processes.
