Director, Financial Controller - Remote

About the role

Author Health is revolutionizing mental health care delivery with a virtual-first, innovative care model that provides community-based, wrap-around outpatient services—including psychiatric, psychotherapeutic, and care management—for people with serious mental illness, substance use disorders, and dementia. The Controller will own the accuracy and integrity of Author Health's accounting operations and financial reporting, building scalable processes and controls while partnering with Finance leadership to enhance reporting and analytics capabilities.

Responsibilities

• Own the general ledger, month-end close, and accuracy of financial statements, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and the monthly close process.
• Maintain, document, and continuously improve accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls to ensure repeatable, scalable processes.
• Own revenue recognition across multiple streams (fee-for-service, PMPM, value-based arrangements) with clear documentation and defined processes.
• Ensure financial reporting remains structured and consistent across systems, enabling clean reconciliation from source to report.
• Lead the annual budget and forecast process, reporting variances to management and building dashboards for real-time insights.
• Provide financial analysis to support capital investment decisions, pricing, and contract negotiations.
• Own audit readiness, maintaining audit-ready workpapers and serving as the primary contact for the annual audit.
• Administer the third-party payroll provider relationship (ADP Workforce Now preferred).
• Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal accounting and financial-reporting requirements.
• Partner with Finance leadership to enhance reporting and analytics capabilities as the company scales.
• Build, mentor, and grow an accounting function that operates on defined processes rather than ad hoc effort.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Business Administration required; CPA preferred.
• Eight or more years of accounting experience, with a track record in early-stage or high-growth healthcare companies.
• Deep command of GAAP accounting and experience with revenue recognition in multi-payer healthcare environments.
• Proficiency in accounting software (Business Central/Dynamics 365 preferred) and dashboard/reporting tools (Looker preferred).
• Analytical, data-driven mindset with the ability to translate financial information into clear, actionable insights.
• Hands-on operator comfortable in fast-moving environments, capable of building processes while executing day-to-day work.
• Proven ability to collaborate across departments and shape a still-forming role independently.
• Knowledge of healthcare industry accounting, including MSO-PC structures, physician-practice revenue reconciliation, value-based payment models, and Medicare Advantage plans is a plus.

Work Environment

This is a remote position with up to 15% travel required for team meetings and company events. The role is largely sedentary, involving extended computer use, talking, and hearing.

Schedule

Full-time position, minimum 40 hours per week (Monday–Friday), with additional hours as needed to meet business and close-cycle deadlines.

Pay

Base salary range: $140,000–$160,000, commensurate with experience, plus performance bonus.
