About the Role

A not-for-profit company based in New York, dedicated to making a positive impact in its community, is seeking a Director of Finance & Accounting to oversee financial operations and accounting functions, ensuring accurate reporting and compliance. This role plays a critical part in supporting strategic decision-making and financial planning.

Responsibilities

  • Financial Leadership & Strategy
    • Develop and implement financial strategies aligned with organizational goals and long-term sustainability.
    • Serve as a strategic advisor on planning, resource allocation, performance management, and risk mitigation.
    • Provide financial analysis and recommendations to support business decision-making.
    • Monitor financial performance and identify opportunities to improve efficiency and revenue generation.
    • Develop key performance indicators and leadership reporting to support organizational performance monitoring.
  • Accounting & Financial Management
    • Direct all accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, revenue, payroll, and month-end close processes.
    • Ensure timely and accurate financial reporting in accordance with GAAP.
    • Oversee cash flow management, liquidity planning, banking relationships, and reserve management.
    • Maintain and enhance accounting policies, procedures, and systems.
  • Budgeting, Forecasting & Analysis
    • Lead the annual budgeting process in partnership with department leaders.
    • Develop financial forecasts, multi-year projections, and scenario analyses.
    • Monitor budget performance and provide variance analysis.
    • Support leadership in evaluating program performance and resource allocation decisions.
  • Grant & Fund Accounting
    • Oversee grant accounting, compliance, reporting, and restricted fund management.
    • Ensure proper allocation of expenses across programs, grants, and funding sources.
    • Monitor grant expenditures and compliance with donor and funding requirements.
    • Partner with development teams on grant proposals, budgets, and financial reporting.
  • Audit, Compliance & Internal Controls
    • Coordinate annual audits and prepare supporting schedules and documentation.
    • Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
    • Oversee preparation and filing of IRS Form 990 and related regulatory reporting.
    • Strengthen internal controls, financial policies, and risk management practices.
  • Team Leadership
    • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of finance and accounting professionals.
    • Oversee employee performance management, coaching, and professional development.
    • Manage external auditors, consultants, and service providers.
    • Drive process improvements, system enhancements, and automation initiatives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Progressive finance and accounting experience, including financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, internal controls, and audit management.
  • Leadership experience managing and developing finance teams.
  • Experience in nonprofit finance and accounting, including:
    • Fund accounting and regulatory compliance.
    • Overseeing annual audits, IRS Form 990 preparation, and working with external auditors.
    • Managing grants, restricted funds, donor reporting, and funding compliance requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • CPA or MBA.

Pay

Competitive annual salary range starting at $150k.
