About the Role
This position directs the development and implementation of comprehensive and integrated communications strategies designed to promote Unum Group and its business entities/brands, protect its reputation, and inspire key audiences to act. You will deliver the right message at the right time in the right way to the right audience, whether internal or external to Unum Group.
Responsibilities
- Direct the development and implementation of comprehensive communications strategies (internal and external) to deliver business goals for assigned scope (e.g., department, subject matter, channel, project)
- Lead the development of key communications messages and ensure adherence of employee communications to these messages
- Provide strategic communications counsel to executive leaders and key partners, including real-time advice for sensitive or complex scenarios, guidance on communications tactics, and preparation for key opportunities (e.g., events, media relations, incident communications, presentations)
- Maximize communications effectiveness by aligning, integrating, and pursuing content placement across paid, earned, shared, and owned channels
- Support continuous improvement in Corporate Communications through outcome-based, measurable initiatives and maintain an effective infrastructure for information sharing, two-way communication, and high-quality content delivery
- Enhance the employee experience through messaging and methods, embracing emerging technologies and evolving audience needs
- Partner on change and transformation efforts by developing and implementing communications plans that build awareness, adoption, and sustaining efforts
- Actively collaborate with colleagues and leaders to foster diversity of thought, personal development, and continuous improvement
- Direct the development of creative assets in partnership with Corporate Communications colleagues to support communications strategy outcomes
- Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
- Minimum 10 years of progressively responsible communications experience in an agency or in-house environment
- Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, with strong news and business judgment
- Seasoned writer and editor
- Familiarity with the creation and development of electronic and print publications
- Demonstrated ability to think strategically, develop communications solutions that meet business outcomes, and navigate change and ambiguity independently
- Ability to work successfully with senior leaders, including the chief executive officer, to provide communications counsel and support
- Previous experience in a corporate setting or the insurance/financial services industry is preferred but not required
Pay
The base salary range for this position is $89,900–$169,900. Actual pay will be based on skills, geographical location, and experience. Unum also offers a portfolio of benefits, including healthcare, insurance, performance-based incentive plans, paid time off, and a 401(k) retirement plan with an employer match up to 5% and an additional 4.5% contribution regardless of employee contribution.
