About the Role

Under the direction of the CNO, this position provides daily and strategic administrative oversight, service line leadership, and operational control to patient care units. Responsibilities include 24-hour patient care and nursing services, managerial and administrative supervision of nursing units, and ensuring care across the continuum with an understanding of the functional and developmental age of patients served. The role requires active participation in fulfilling the mission of Whittier Hospital Medical Center and demonstrating behavior consistent with its Core Values, while supporting the strategic plan and Performance Improvement Plan (PIP).

Responsibilities

  • Make effective decisions that align with the organization’s vision and goals.
  • Integrate department services with other departments to ensure coordinated hospital operations.
  • Communicate effectively in writing and verbally to ensure understanding.
  • Lead through listening, questioning, and team-building; mediate conflicts and negotiate effectively.
  • Support staff through monthly department meetings (10/year).
  • Lead teams through change, addressing resistance positively.
  • Perform additional duties in different hospital areas as needed or determined by senior management.
  • Maintain confidentiality related to job responsibilities.
  • Resolve problems proactively and project a positive professional image.
  • Complete assigned work on time and adhere to the Standards of Conduct.
  • Model the organization’s values and support Target 100 initiatives.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures to guide service provision, reviewing and revising them annually.
  • Use a system approach to problem-solving and process improvement involving staff.
  • Understand and comply with regulations applicable to the area of responsibility.
  • Monitor quality indicators and modify processes to improve customer satisfaction and PSMS scores.
  • Plan for changes in services, work demands, and staffing, aligning departmental planning with the organization’s strategic plan.
  • Improve personal leadership capabilities, set goals, and remain current in the professional field.
  • Attend 90% of required meetings and maintain licensure and certifications.
  • Use financial information for strategic and operational decision-making, including budget management for staffing and supplies.
  • Monitor and manage employee time and attendance records (KRONOS) for accuracy.
  • Identify and implement cost-control methods while providing value to patients and the hospital.
  • Promote a safe environment and minimize risk, including reducing workers’ compensation injuries through education and follow-up.
  • Ensure employees utilize proper ergonomics.
  • Administer human resource policies and comply with employment laws (EEO, FMLA, ADA, etc.).
  • Coach, counsel, and discipline employees, providing ongoing feedback.
  • Interview, select, and supervise competent and qualified staff.
  • Delegate, schedule, and assign work to achieve goals.
  • Orient, train, and develop staff, ensuring requirements (e.g., new employee orientation, ethics training) are met on time.
  • Assess qualifications, competency, and evaluate staff, conducting performance evaluations on time.
  • Administer policies and procedures regarding safety, environmental health, and risk management.
  • Minimize controllable turnover within the department.

Requirements

  • Graduate from an accredited school of nursing; AA, Bachelor’s, or Master’s Degree in Nursing or related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years as an RN, with 1 year in a supervisory role in the Emergency Department or ICU.
  • Current California RN License.
  • BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications.
  • Certification in clinical area preferred.
