About the role

The United Soccer League (USL) is shaping the future of American soccer through the largest connected soccer ecosystem in the United States. With a presence in more than 200 communities nationwide, the USL unites every level of the game — from youth development to Division One professional competition — across both men’s and women’s pathways. USL is seeking a strategic, creative, and collaborative Director of Content to lead the league's editorial vision and content strategy across every owned platform.

This role is responsible for shaping how the USL tells its story; developing the editorial strategy that brings the league’s biggest moments, clubs, players, and communities to life while supporting audience growth, brand development, and business objectives. The Director of Content leads the development and execution of the league's content strategy, aligning editorial, social media, and multimedia storytelling around a shared editorial vision.

This leader will work collaboratively across Marketing, Communications, Creative Services, Broadcast & Media, and Corporate Partnerships to identify the stories that matter most, shape how they are told, and deliver them to the right audiences across every platform. The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker, accomplished storyteller, and collaborative leader who thrives in the fast-paced environment of live sports.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute the USL's content strategy across editorial, social media, video, web, and emerging platforms.
  • Establish the editorial vision, content priorities, and publishing strategy that support the USL brand and business objectives.
  • Lead and mentor the league's editorial, social media, and multimedia teams, aligning content creators around a shared editorial vision.
  • Oversee the planning, production, and distribution of written, video, and social content across all USL-owned platforms.
  • Lead editorial planning around league initiatives, competitions, and major announcements.
  • Identify and develop compelling stories, recurring content, and original programming that strengthens fan engagement and audience growth.
  • Ensure content is optimized for each platform while maintaining a consistent brand voice.
  • Cultivate relationships with social media and digital platform partners to identify new opportunities and stay ahead of emerging trends.
  • Establish workflows, editorial standards, and publishing processes that enable high-quality storytelling across all platforms.
  • Develop integrated content plans in collaboration with Marketing, Communications, Broadcast & Media, Corporate Partnerships, and Creative Services.
  • Build strong relationships with club content teams to align storytelling and support league-wide campaigns.
  • Manage department budgets, production calendars, external creators, agencies, and production partners as needed.
  • Develop content strategies that grow audiences, deepen fan engagement, and strengthen the USL brand.
  • Use audience insights, analytics, and industry trends to continually refine content strategy and improve performance.
  • Establish content KPIs and regularly report on audience growth, engagement, and performance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Digital Media, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in content strategy, editorial, digital media, social media, or sports content production.
  • Proven success leading content teams and developing strategies that grow audiences, increase engagement, and strengthen a brand.
  • Experience leading content teams and managing creative professionals, including writers, producers, editors, and social media professionals.
  • Experience covering live sports, entertainment, or other real-time events requiring strong editorial judgment and rapid decision-making.
  • Exceptional storytelling, writing, and editing skills across multiple formats and platforms.
  • Deep understanding of social media platforms, digital publishing, video content, and audience development strategies.
  • Comfortable using audience insights, analytics, and performance data to inform content decisions.
  • Collaborative leader who communicates effectively across departments and builds strong relationships with internal and external partners.
  • Highly organized, thrives in a fast-paced environment, and manages multiple priorities under tight deadlines.
  • Experience developing and executing successful content or social media campaigns.
  • Passion for soccer and an understanding of the North American soccer landscape.
  • Bilingual abilities in English and Spanish are a plus.
  • Must have U.S. work authorization.

Skills

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively interact with team members, executives, member clubs, and external partners.
  • Ability to work independently in a multi-faceted, fast, fluid, and deadline-driven environment.
  • Ability to work as business needs require, which may include long days, evenings, weekends, occasional holidays, and travel.
  • Positive attitude, strong work ethic, and a willingness to roll up your sleeves when needed.
