Under general supervision, the Geodesist II performs advanced geodetic work, including the analysis, interpretation, and application of geodetic data and methodologies to support projects requiring precise measurements and calculations related to the shape, position, and movement of the earth and its features.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct analyses of geodetic survey data using modern geodetic techniques and equipment.
  • Interpret and process geodetic data, ensuring accuracy and compliance with NDOT standards.
  • Prepare reports, CADD mapping files, and documentation reflecting geodetic findings and recommendations.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of geodetic control networks.
  • Collaborate with other technical staff and external agencies to support geodetic projects.
  • Provide guidance and support to junior geodesists and technicians.
  • Stay current with advancements in geodetic technology and best practices.
  • Compute horizontal coordinates of control networks using triangulation, trilateration, and traversing.
  • Compute vertical coordinates for control networks using direct leveling to establish elevation, height, and grade.
  • Compare horizontal and vertical networks to established survey standards and make adjustments as needed.
  • Assess existing control and acquire additional survey control for engineering projects.
  • Analyze existing control and raw survey data to ensure project specifications and land survey standards are met.
  • Verify newly collected survey data for mathematical correctness and request additional data when errors occur.
  • Compute coordinates on various geographic grid systems and perform conversions between systems.
  • Convert data between national datums and ground elevation-dependent grids.
  • Retrace and adjust existing surveys such as highway alignments, property boundaries, and utilities.
  • Maintain geodetic data and related information in a computer database, including coordinates, descriptions, and quality assurance numbers.
  • Distribute compiled geodetic data to State and local agencies, department sections, and the public.
  • Create survey control plan sheets for inclusion in contract plans and verify contract plans for completeness of survey information.
  • Provide training and interpretation on the use of geodetic data, methods, and procedures.
  • Review existing standards, controls, and equipment, and recommend improvements or modifications.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in math, physics, civil engineering, land surveying, or a closely related field and one year of progressively responsible experience involving civil engineering, surveying, or photogrammetric work; OR
  • One year of experience as a Geodesist I in Nevada State service; OR
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.
  • Proficiency in surveying and geodetic processing and adjustment software (e.g., Trimble Business Center, Starnet).
  • Proficiency in CADD mapping and GIS software (e.g., MicroStation, ArcGIS Pro).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Valid driver’s license at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
  • Ability to travel up to 25% of the time.
  • Authorization to work for any employer in the U.S. (sponsorship for employment visas is not available).

This position is on-site in Carson City, Nevada, and does not offer remote work options.
