About the role

The Direct Support Specialist provides hands-on assistance to individuals with mental health conditions, helping them with daily living activities and promoting overall well-being. They work under the supervision of a mental health practitioner and/or professional offering support and encouragement to help clients achieve greater independence and community inclusion.

Responsibilities

  • Provides services as outlined in the client’s treatment plan.
  • Affixes and leads activities, social skills training, and other interventions designed to promote client engagement.
  • Provides a supportive presence, helping clients manage stress, cope with difficult emotions, and build positive relationships.
  • Observes clients for changes in behavior, mood, or physical health and reports any concerns to the appropriate staff.
  • Maintains medication administration and encourages medication compliance.
  • Creates a safe and supportive environment by implementing and adhering to facility policies, procedures, and safety protocols.
  • Accurately documents client care, observations, and progress in accordance with guidelines.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned or requested.

Qualifications

  • Required Education, Certification, And Experience: High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Passes a criminal background check through MN DHS NetStudy.
  • Access to a personal vehicle and the ability and willingness to use the vehicle in carrying out the position’s responsibilities if required.
  • Valid driver’s license and insurable under the agency’s automobile insurance policy if required.
  • Free from substance use problems for no less than 2 years.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, And Other Attributes

  • Basic knowledge of basic mental health dynamics regarding the diagnosis, assessment, and treatment of an array of mental health, substance health, and other behavioral issues.
  • Knowledge of word processing, electronic records, email, internet, scan, and fax.
  • Skill in adaptability and flexibility, teamwork, and interdisciplinary setting.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain client confidentiality per the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA).
