About the role

The Direct Support Professional (DSP) is supervised by the Residential Manager or Home Coordinator and is responsible for supporting and implementing the individuals' vision and outcomes as outlined in the Individual Support Plan (ISP). The DSP ensures agency compliance with policies and procedures to guarantee the safety, appropriate supervision, and necessary supports for individuals to live as independently as their non-disabled peers.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in circles of support to assist with the development and implementation of outcomes agreed upon by the circle of support.
  • Document the individual’s progress toward their vision in daily participation logs using techniques identified by the support plan.
  • Complete all State and agency-related training and implement training goals assigned at the individual’s circle of support.
  • Maintain accurate records of each individual’s progress on all ISP goals by recording responses to training sessions on Daily Participation Log forms, routed to the Program Specialist/QIDP for review, then to the Agency Case Manager.
  • Assist and ensure the individual’s daily living skills are protected from harm.
  • Attend all scheduled staff and agency meetings, training for recertification, and other assigned meetings; do not bring children or relatives to meetings.
  • Provide data collection and implement Behavior Support Plans developed by the Behavior Specialist or Analyst.
  • Complete orientation to pass all State and agency training requirements at 80% and complete any future training assigned by the supervisor or as a result of periodic job evaluations.
  • Maintain a current Class D driver’s license to transport individuals and provide the agency with documentation of personal vehicle maintenance and proof of vehicle insurance.
  • Transport individuals to social, recreational, and religious activities as scheduled on the posted monthly activity schedule; do not transport individuals to your personal home without approval from the Director.
  • Assist in the maintenance and care of the home, supplies, and equipment, including keeping vehicles clean and the vehicle log up to date, and be accountable for the use and inventory of equipment, supplies, and appliances purchased for the individual.
  • Do not smoke, eat, or drink in agency vehicles.
  • When assigned, dispense routine oral medication as prescribed according to agency policies and procedures, following instructions from medication administration training for unlicensed personnel.
  • Complete required incident reports and report incidents of abuse, neglect, exploitation, or reportable staff misconduct within the required timeframe; notify family/guardians and ISC of any incidents as required.
  • Make accurate and complete entries in the home’s daily log to ensure 24-hour logs are present and accurate.
  • Ensure passengers and self are safely secured in seat belts before moving vehicles; assist all individuals on and off vehicles.
  • Report for duty at the scheduled time and properly utilize the time and attendance system.
  • Go off duty only when appropriately relieved and account for the whereabouts of all individuals during on-duty hours.
  • Demonstrate respect for all agency individuals, families, neighbors, and co-workers daily.
  • Report and document all staff injuries via the worker’s compensation First Report of Injury and other forms within 24 hours to the supervisor and Human Resources.
  • Follow agency on-call procedures to report emergencies related to residents, facility, or vehicle after office hours, on weekends, or holidays.
  • Assist with personal care needs, including bathing, feeding, ironing, laundry, personal grooming, and other activities of daily living.
  • Assist with the preparation of well-balanced and culinary diverse meals to meet nutritional needs as outlined in the approved meal plan.
  • Assist the Program Specialist/QIDP with quality inspections of the facility to ensure the individual’s home meets sanitary and safety compliance.
  • Assist individuals in preparing belongings for travel (e.g., home visits, overnight visits with friends, vacations).
  • Document the individual’s expenses monthly via a cash expenditure envelope and forward all receipts to the Financial Case Manager.
  • Maintain an accurate record of each individual’s ISP by documenting daily outcomes, action steps, and significant events.
  • Ensure compliance with required dress code and agency identification badge guidelines.
  • Use universal precautions and follow infection control policies when assisting individuals and/or staff.
  • Implement behavior and therapy plans appropriately.
  • Ensure accountability for individuals’ medications, MARS, vehicles, personal items, monies, food, and all other daily essentials.
  • Assist, encourage, and support individuals in practicing cleanliness and safety.
  • Practice and encourage professional ethical standards to ensure consistent and fair supervision and training.
  • Assist and support individuals in maintaining a friendly, clean, and organized home setting.
  • Assist the individual and the Program Specialist or QIDP with compliance for all regulatory inspections.
  • Serve on agency committees as assigned.
  • Complete all special projects assigned by the Program Specialist, QIDP, Home Coordinator, or Regional Director.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong documentation skills.
  • Excellent judgment, problem-solving, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with individuals with disabilities, families, co-workers, staff, supervisors, funding sources, and other social service agency personnel.
  • Physical ability to fulfill job requirements.
  • Ability to supervise and/or assist individuals in the Residential program.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Maintain and abide by OSHA requirements and guidelines.
  • Observe all Fire and Safety Policies and Procedures.
  • Observe all Personnel Policies and Procedures.
  • Observe all Agency’s Policies and Procedures.
  • Observe all HIPAA Policies and Procedures and maintain confidentiality.
  • Complete and return all paperwork distributed by the Human Resource Department.
  • Attend all required and scheduled trainings and meetings.
  • Always maintain a professional demeanor and exercise good professional judgment in all areas of employment duties.
  • Document time worked accurately.

Skills

  • Proficiency in operating telephone, cellular telephone, copier, fax, computer, and calculator.
  • Computer literacy in MS Office products: Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint.
  • Experience with Agency Electronic Medical Record and other software programs.
  • Ability to meet the physical requirements of the job.
  • Knowledge of Bloodborne Pathogens, Right-To-Know, HIPAA, Security Acts, Fire & Safety.

Working Conditions

Community Living Arrangement / Family / Residential Home.

Pay

$15.00 per hour.
