Direct Support Coordinator-Weekend Support
Part-time position, 24 hours per week on weekends: Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 12:00 PM to 9:00 PM (includes a 1-hour lunch). Position is 11 months per year.
About the Role
Under general supervision, the Direct Support Coordinator assists the Transition to Independent Living (TIL) program management with implementing the functional aspects of the program. This role provides supplemental educational and life skills assistance to students under instructor direction, supports classroom setup and facility maintenance, and accompanies students on community excursions, medical appointments, job sites, and leisure activities to help integrate students into society.
Responsibilities
- Assist in the implementation and development of the functional component of the Transition to Independent Living Program.
- Complete initial assessments and periodic evaluations (grades) of students.
- Serve as a resource for students, referring them to appropriate campus resources (e.g., Counselor, DSPS).
- Support students in community and campus membership, including:
- Serving as a health and wellness coach (e.g., workout buddy, mobility training).
- Serving as a social coach (e.g., attending social activities with students).
- Model appropriate social behavior.
- Support students academically, including:
- Assisting with time management and accessing tutoring services.
- Providing assistance with outside classwork and completing assignments.
- Assist and train students in the maintenance and care of equipment and facilities.
- Help students develop self-advocacy skills, such as communication with peers, instructors, and managers.
- Assist students in acquiring personal finance skills, including budgeting, banking, check writing, and paying bills.
- Ensure the safety and welfare of students assigned to the program.
- Use electronic records management software to maintain accurate student records, including attendance.
- Assist students with taking medications on schedule and in appropriate dosages.
- Help students schedule regular healthcare appointments and, when needed, accompany them to medical/dental appointments.
- Report emergencies following established procedures.
- Review and maintain medical assistance records.
- Document and report special incidents to appropriate agencies and staff.
- Administer First Aid and CPR if necessary.
- Report abuse/harassment to appropriate agencies/staff.
- Complete help desk tickets for minor repairs and maintenance of office equipment or facilities.
- Transport students as assigned, following established procedures and ensuring student safety.
- Facilitate student activities on weekends, evenings, and/or Taft College vacation days as assigned.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Associate degree or equivalent and 6 months of experience working with adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, OR
- High school diploma or equivalent plus two years of experience working with adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
- Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
- Valid California Driver’s license.
- First Aid and CPR certifications.
Qualifications
- One year of experience working with adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
- One year of experience using Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.
- Experience with programs supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (e.g., Social Security, Medi-Cal, Regional Center).
- Pursuit of a degree or training in Disability Studies or a related field.
- Ability to develop rapport with students having intellectual and developmental disabilities.
- Willingness to assist students and promote positive relationships.
- Ability to demonstrate fairness, patience, and good judgment in interactions with students.
- Dependability, punctuality, and attention to detail.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
- Initiative, poise, and tact in performing duties.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Flexibility to assume other assignments as needed.
Working Conditions
- Assignments are 11 months per year, 24 hours per week, primarily on weekends.
- May be assigned to a specific residence hall.
- Work may be indoors or outdoors to meet student and college schedules.
- Schedule may vary to include days, evenings, or weekends, with possible overtime.
- Must follow proper safety precautions and college procedures.
- May require extra hours, including evenings or weekends, throughout the year.
- May involve travel, including field trips, student appointments, workshops, training, or meetings.

Environment
The Transition to Independent Living (TIL) program is an educational residence hall experience for intellectually and developmentally disabled adults, staffed 24 hours per day, seven days a week. The program may be closed during college academic breaks. Instruction includes meal preparation, money management, shopping, housekeeping, use of appliances, safety, communication, transportation, personal care, and interpersonal relationships. The program is primarily based on the Taft College campus.
Supervision
Supervision is received from the TIL Independent Living Skills Manager and TIL Program Assistant Director. This position has no supervisory duties but may take or give work directions on assigned projects.
Pay
Range 13 on the Classified Employees Salary Schedule, with a starting hourly rate of $22.47–$24.47.
