About the Role

To identify and correct visual and dimensional flaws in castings to ensure the final product meets customer specifications. This multi-skilled role facilitates the flow of parts by performing primary and secondary functions, with an expectation that at least 20% of total hours worked will be spent on secondary tasks. For example, if the primary function is visual/dimensional inspection, straightening must be performed at least 20% of the time, and vice versa.

Responsibilities

Visual / Dimensional Inspection

• Follow Quality Systems and Technique Card requirements.
• Fixture parts or inspect them freestanding as required.
• Visually inspect castings for conformance to specifications.
• Dimensionally inspect castings using templates, micrometers, gauges, calipers, ultrasound, boroscopes, and other measuring devices.
• Check casting hardness using Brinell, Rockwell, and other instruments.
• Mark castings to identify areas needing rework, mill rates, etc.
• Adjust fixtures, gauges, and precision measuring tools to calibrated standards.
• Interpret CMM reports and perform other functions to move parts through production.
• Work from established rest points for targeting.

Straightening

• Set up castings on surface plates or fixtures.
• Evaluate part conditions using precision measuring tools or CMM reports; determine effective straightening methods.
• Establish datums to casting surfaces and fixture on surface plates; straighten to rotational tolerance.
• Straighten castings using presses, straightening fixtures, profile templates, and power or manual tools.

Casting Repair and Analysis

• Make recommendations to resolve part non-conformity.
• Work across disciplines to resolve quality issues.
• Perform blending of defect areas and other tasks as directed.
• Recommend part routing as required.

Documentation

• Complete and maintain records, logs, non-conformance reports, and production reports.

Safety

• Adhere to plant and department safety rules.
• Safely operate all equipment and tools.
• Identify and report safety problems.

Requirements

• Current valid certification in visual/dimensional inspection and UTT inspection.
• Some operations may require rework analyst certification.
• Previous training or experience in straightening, targeting, grinding, or CMM disposition is preferred.
• Ability to perform mathematical calculations as required.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to read, follow, and interpret blueprints, Technique Cards, Process Control Procedures, and other technical specifications.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team, including giving and receiving instructions and training.
• Physical ability to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

• Hoist and pallet jacks
• Dimensional measuring tools (calipers, micrometers, gauges)
• Templates and basic hand tools (hammers, wrenches, etc.)
• Fabricated blocks and hand grinders
• Porta-power (hydraulic ram) and band saws
• Light meter and fixtures
• Surface plates and protective equipment/clothing
• Profilometer and straightening presses

Training

Training will combine classroom instruction, on-the-job learning, and task-specific modules. Employees are responsible for progressing through tasks while meeting performance and quality standards outlined in the Step Progression Record.
