Position Summary
The Sun Prairie Area School District is seeking a creative and talented storyteller to join the Strategic Communications team in a part-time role. At the heart of this position is storytelling. The Digital Media & Communications Specialist will discover and share the people, moments, programs, accomplishments, and experiences that tell the story of SPASD.
Key Responsibilities
- Proactively identify and develop compelling stories about SPASD students, staff, schools, programs, accomplishments, and community partnerships.
- Visit schools, classrooms, programs, and district events to gather stories and original content.
- Interview students, staff, families, and community partners and develop engaging features, profiles, articles, and other content.
- Write and edit high-quality content for district publications, the website, newsletters, social media, and other communication channels.
- Develop creative approaches to written, visual, video, and digital storytelling.
- Capture photography and short-form video to complement and strengthen district stories.
- Support the writing and development of major district publications, including the annual school calendar, back-to-school newsletter, annual report, and other districtwide communications.
- Build relationships throughout the District to develop a strong pipeline of stories and identify voices and experiences that may otherwise go untold.
- Collaborate with the Strategic Communications team on storytelling campaigns, creative concepts, and special projects.
- Assist with editing, proofreading, fact-checking, and preparing content for publication.
Experience & Skills
- Strong writing, interviewing, editing, and storytelling skills.
- A natural curiosity and ability to recognize and develop a compelling story.
- Strong creative instincts and an ability to develop engaging content across different formats.
- Experience writing feature stories, profiles, articles, or other narrative-driven content.
- Photography and/or video storytelling skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills and comfort connecting with students, staff, families, and community members.
- The ability to work independently, take initiative, and move a story from idea to completion.
- Strong attention to detail, organization, and commitment to accuracy.
- The ability to tell stories about diverse students, families, staff, and communities authentically and respectfully.
Education & Experience
- A high school diploma or equivalent required.
- College coursework, a degree, or relevant experience in journalism, communications, English, creative writing, public relations, digital media, marketing, or a related field is preferred.
- Demonstrated storytelling experience may be considered in place of formal education in a related field.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience conducting interviews and developing stories from beginning to end.
- Experience with photography and/or video production.
- Experience creating content for websites, newsletters, publications, or digital platforms.
- Familiarity with content management systems, Canva, and/or Adobe Creative Suite is a plus.
- Experience in education, journalism, nonprofit communications, or community-focused organizations is a plus.
