Digital Literacy Librarian

The Digital Literacy Librarian will design, implement, and lead a comprehensive information, digital, and media literacy curriculum, integrating digital citizenship values and information literacy skills across academic disciplines. This role will lead instruction and outreach to students and faculty, emphasizing the ethical, safe, and responsible use of AI in education (AI Vision Statement).

Responsibilities

• Develop, coordinate, and implement the library’s information and media literacy instruction program, including group, individual, and online components (e.g., LibGuides).
• Design and conduct library instruction and orientation sessions for classes, as well as instruct individual users on print and electronic resources.
• Partner with administrators, faculty, and course team leaders to embed digital literacy skills (media literacy, AI, digital citizenship) systematically throughout the school.
• Establish collaborative partnerships with faculty, students, and staff to support engagement with library services and resources.
• Lead and collaborate with campus technology leaders, deans, ITS, and others to promote the ethical use of AI, digital citizenship, and the application of library resources in the classroom.
• Stay current with emerging technologies and act as the library liaison for AI and technology initiatives.
• Support the ethical and effective use of media, technology, and AI tools across the research lifecycle, including discovery, analysis, writing, data visualization, and digital creation.
• Provide guidance on responsible use, including transparency, attribution, bias, copyright, and academic integrity.
• Work with the Stephan Archives staff to leverage and highlight archival digital collections.
• Collaborate with the Community Engagement Librarian to market and brand library resources, services, and programs, with a focus on electronic resources and digital collections.
• Assist faculty in developing information resources for coursework using LibGuides, Google Education, and Canvas (the school’s learning management system).
• Create research guides, instruction resources, digital materials, videos/tutorials, and make them available to students, faculty, and staff.
• Contribute to general duties, including special projects, collection development, and strategic planning as requested by the Library Director.
• Work professionally and cooperatively within the library, school, and broader community.
• Perform service desk and student supervision duties, including one evening per week until 9:50 p.m. and some weekend shifts.

Requirements

• Master’s in Library/Information Sciences from an ALA-accredited institution.
• Customer service and outreach experience.
• At least 2 years of demonstrated experience teaching information, media, and digital literacy in an academic or school library setting.
• Experience with digital humanities, archival collections, or other digital projects preferred.
• Experience in Educational Technology, Instructional Design, or Digital Innovation preferred.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written.
• Ability to show initiative and flexibility, adapting to users with varying technology proficiency levels.
• Strong time management skills and the ability to prioritize.
• Detail-oriented, congenial, patient, and reliable.
• Ability to work in a collaborative team environment.
• Experience planning, managing, and overseeing projects, meeting deadlines, and aligning work with library and school service goals.
• Formal training and/or experience with the design and delivery of instruction.
• Strong knowledge of AI in libraries and research, digital content, electronic resources, ebooks, publishing trends, and library technology.
• Demonstrated interest in critical thinking about AI tools and their impact on research and learning.
• Ability to continuously learn new skills, technologies, and methods and apply them to work.
• Ability to work effectively with a diverse population, including teenagers and adults from diverse cultures.

Work Characteristics and Physical Demands

• Fully in-person role requiring on-campus presence for all student interactions.
• Physical demands exceed those of sedentary work; must remain on feet for extended periods, navigate stairs, stoop, kneel, crouch, and lift.
• Routine use of standard office equipment (computers, phones, photocopiers, etc.).
• Must be capable of using a visual display terminal with continuous wrist movement on a keyboard.
• Required to talk, hear, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel, and reach with hands and arms.
• Must work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, to accommodate student schedules.
• Must be able to lift up to 20 lbs. without assistance.
• Ability to see within normal parameters.
• Operates in a professional work environment.
