About the role

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Marketing and Communications within the Office of Marketing and Creative Services, the Digital Content Specialist is responsible for creating, managing, and optimizing content (images, video, and copy) for the University’s flagship social media accounts (Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, Facebook, and emerging platforms). This role ensures consistent branding, audience engagement, and accessibility while identifying content opportunities and collaborating with campus partners to tell the University’s story. The Specialist also manages campus digital displays, updates website content related to social media, and supports the University’s marketing and communications strategy. This role participates in campus-wide collaboration groups and is eligible for a hybrid telework schedule with supervisory approval.

Responsibilities

  • Create, curate, and manage content across the University’s social media platforms.
  • Collaborate with the marketing team and cross-campus partners to identify and execute content opportunities, including cross-channel storytelling for the UBalt website, blogs, email campaigns, and print materials.
  • Support the University’s marketing and communications strategy to build engagement, brand awareness, and support student recruitment and retention efforts.
  • Ensure consistent branding and messaging throughout the University as part of the marketing and creative services team.
  • Consult and collaborate with internal constituencies to audit and guide the development or improvement of social media, web content, and digital architecture based on best practices and internal standards.
  • Stay abreast of technology, social media, and analytics trends to inform content planning and provide recommendations for digital communications strategy.
  • Establish and manage content channels and develop a social media presence on emerging platforms.
  • Monitor comments and messages, engaging positively with audiences to share information, build community, and widen networks.
  • Review and report on analytics to measure effectiveness and recommend strategic improvements.
  • Coordinate with the marketing team and advertising agency for social strategy/activities tied to paid campaigns.
  • Respond to urgent social media posts outside of traditional work hours (9 a.m.–5 p.m.) and weekends, including occasional after-hours or weekend event coverage.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing/Digital Media Marketing, Journalism, or a related field.
  • Three years of progressively responsible professional experience in content development, digital media marketing, project management, and using photography and video for digital campaigns.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Communications, Marketing/Digital Media Marketing, Journalism, or a related field.
  • Previous experience in a higher-education environment.
  • Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite and video software.
  • Experience with social media analytics (e.g., Google Analytics, Sprout Social).
  • Experience with website CMS platforms and marketing CRM software.
  • Experience working directly with clients to achieve digital content goals.

Skills

  • Demonstrated ability to write and edit across print and digital marketing platforms.
  • Superior written, electronic, and verbal communication skills with excellent attention to detail.
  • Thorough understanding of content development and strategy, especially for web and social media.
  • Familiarity with digital best practices and analytics.
  • High levels of initiative, motivation, and strategic thinking.
  • Ability to cultivate relationships with stakeholders, set and meet deadlines, and manage multiple projects with minimal direction.
  • Strong customer service ethic and creative problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of key and emerging social media platforms and digital campaign management.
  • Knowledge of Associated Press style and content-strategy fundamentals.
  • Familiarity with content management systems.
  • Ability to manage student workers.
