“Difendiamo il nostro cibo e il lavoro degli agricoltori”: Coldiretti Umbria in piazza a Strasburgo

About the role

Coldiretti is mobilizing and moving to Strasbourg on January 20 in front of the European Parliament headquarters to block the policies of Ursula Von der Leyen and her inner circle of technocrats, which they say endanger the income of European farmers and 400 million citizens.

Key concerns

• The Mercosur agreement, as signed without reciprocity and adequate control guarantees, would be a serious harm for consumers and farmers
• It would set a dangerous precedent for future possible agreements, allowing products made without the same health, environmental, ethical labor, and food safety standards required of EU farmers to enter Europe and reach our tables
• Importing products made with completely different rules and child labor exploitation is considered an injustice not only against agriculture but against the entire community

• Date: January 20, starting at 9:00 AM
• Location: Place de Bordeaux, Strasbourg, in front of the European Parliament
• Participants: President Ettore Prandini and Secretary General Vincenzo Gesmundo, together with 1,000 Coldiretti member farmers (including from Umbria), joining French farmers from FNSEA
• Goal: To ask the European Parliament to stop the destructive project of Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen

Statement from Coldiretti Umbria

Albano Agabiti, president of Coldiretti Umbria, who will lead the Umbrian delegation to Strasbourg, stated: "Defending true Made in Italy and Umbrian production means defending farmers' work, citizens' health, and local economies. Our mobilization continues to firmly say no to an agreement that, as it stands, protects neither producers nor consumers. The agreement's consequences would also be felt in Umbrian agriculture, putting pressure on quality productions that base their competitiveness on high standards, traceability, and food safety—a model at risk of being compromised by the entry of low-cost products obtained without the same rules."
