About the Role
The Dietary Cook prepares and serves food using proper food handling and food safety techniques for residents, employees, and special events. Meals are crafted to taste good, be served at the proper temperature, and presented attractively while adhering to established standards. The role also involves maintaining a clean and safe working environment.
Responsibilities
- Review menus prior to preparation of food.
- Prepare food for regular and therapeutic diets according to the planned menu, as well as for employees and special events, as instructed by the supervisor.
- Prepare alternative items to meet residents’ individual needs and food preferences.
- Portion and prepare food using proper food handling and food safety techniques according to established policies, procedures, guidelines, and regulations.
- Prepare food in accordance with sanitary regulations and established policies and procedures.
- Make only authorized changes to the planned menu and record the change according to established policy.
- Ensure that food tastes good and is served at the appropriate temperature in an attractive, appetizing manner.
- Ensure that menus are maintained and filed in accordance with established policies and procedures.
- Utilize standardized recipes to prepare menu items.
- Perform other tasks as assigned.
Requirements
- Minimum of tenth grade education or above; GED or High School Diploma preferred.
- ServSafe Food Safety Certification or other food safety certification as required by state or county of facility (preferred).
- Six months’ experience in large quantity food preparation.
- Experience with therapeutic diet preparation preferred.
Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of safe food preparation, handling techniques, and basic nutrition.
- Skilled in quantity food production and basic math.
- Ability to communicate effectively with residents, their family members, and at all levels of the organization.
- Ability to be accurate, concise, and detail-oriented.
- Ability to read, speak, understand, and communicate effectively in English through verbal and written means.
