About the role

As an experienced Technician at Penske, you’ll perform preventative maintenance and repairs of all levels on the newest and best-maintained fleet of vehicles in the industry. You’ll help customers keep their vehicles in shape and on the road. As a Technician I, you are a respected, experienced lead at your location—a Certified Mechanic, Registered Mechanic (by grandfather clause), Designated Mechanic, or Licensed Mechanic. You set an example, informally mentor others, and work independently on major and minor repairs, road tests, and maintenance tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and ensure vehicles are safe for customers
  • Perform preventive maintenance services on truck and trailer equipment in a timely manner
  • Repair and troubleshoot major components such as engines, transmissions, differentials, turbochargers, and fuel system components, including replacing complete assemblies
  • Keep your work area clean and safe
  • Use Penske’s tools and technologies to log, research, and complete repairs, including basic vehicle diagnostics
  • Learn new skills through Penske’s technician training
  • Work on other projects and tasks as assigned by supervisor

Requirements

  • 6 years of practical experience with truck, tractor-trailer, and light-duty maintenance
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred; vocational or technical certification in all applicable ASE certification requirements by the state of Hawaii (e.g., T1-T8, A1-A9)
  • Specialized training and experience in the diagnosis/troubleshooting of major components (engines, transmissions, differentials)
  • OEM training courses, ASE Certification, and 608/609 certifications (preferred)
  • Requirement to obtain an ASE Certification within 90 days of start
  • Experienced using all tools of the trade (including welding equipment, diagnostic equipment, and hand and power tools)
  • Valid driver’s license required; CDL A or CDL B highly preferred
  • Certified Mechanic as defined by Hawaii Law or a Registered Mechanic (grandfathered in through statute)
  • Ability to solve problems and work well as part of a team
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills
  • Willingness to work in non-climate-controlled conditions
  • Basic computer skills
  • Ability to understand and comply with specific instructions, guidelines, rules, Hawaii State regulations, and Penske management policies
  • Ability to perform all work adhering to DOT, OSHA, and Penske safety and maintenance policies, including correct selection and use of appropriate tools, PPE, machine guarding, and established best safety practices
  • Regular, predictable, full attendance is an essential function of the job
  • Willingness to travel as necessary within the district (customers’ yards, close geographical area, and training sites)
  • Ability to work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner
  • Ability to accept responsibility for your own safety and the safety of others

Physical Requirements

  • Frequent movement, standing, walking, climbing, bending, and sitting for extended periods
  • Routine and daily use of hands to grasp, reach, touch, handle, or operate tools and controls
  • Ability to work safely at heights using ladders and elevated working platforms
  • Ability to work safely in all weather conditions
  • Ability to see and hear to safely navigate the work environment with frequent movement of large trucks
  • Regularly lift and/or move up to 50 lbs/23 kg and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 lbs/45 kg
  • Ability to push/pull truck tires on a regular basis that exceed 100 pounds
