Diesel Mechanic

About the role

This is an entry level maintenance helper classification in the Power Plant Mechanic Advancement Program. The incumbent performs mechanical work in electric power generating equipment on an assigned basis. Employment begins with an introductory period of 90 days, starting from the first day of work, to support transition into the role and allow both the employee and the Company to assess mutual fit. During this period, performance, conduct, and reliability are evaluated against position expectations and company values, with guidance and feedback provided. Successful completion confirms continued at‑will employment; failure results in termination at the end of the probationary period. Employment remains at‑will both during and after the introductory period.

Responsibilities

• Observes operation of plant equipment and process for normal operation and identifies developing problems.
• Modifies operation of plant equipment and process to prevent failure to plant operations.
• Performs preventive and minor corrective maintenance on production engines, gas blowers and associated equipment.
• Assists mechanics in preventive and corrective maintenance, engine and system components, teardown, parts cleaning and preparation for re‑assembly.
• Uses hand tools; learns special tools and measuring instruments.
• Drives and maintains company vehicles and forklifts.
• Requires lifting of up to 75 lbs.
• Works outside in adverse weather and noise environment.
• Follows company policy and procedures.
• Troubleshoots and corrects equipment failures, abnormal operating conditions, and reports abnormalities to supervision.
• Maintains plant appearance by cleaning, cutting grass, painting as required.
• Repairs, replaces, and maintains plumbing lines and mechanical parts.
• Assists mechanics or craftsman in cleaning, overhauling, and replacing engines, pumps, and associated equipment.
• Uses hand and power tools such as drills, hydraulic presses, and band saws.
• Performs additional duties as deemed necessary by management.

Requirements

Education: Graduation from high school (or GED) and three years of related mechanical work experience OR vocational training/military service OR any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Required abilities:

• Ability to read and interpret operations and safety manuals, analyze, and apply basic troubleshooting and repair techniques on plant equipment.
• Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license.
• Must pass background check, hearing, and drug test.

Preferred qualifications:

• Mechanical knowledge, preferably in diesel engines.
• Power plant experience.
• Any technical certification or training.

Schedule

• Work hours vary by plant; the work schedule is subject to change per business needs and management discretion.
• Position is on call 24/7 on a rotating basis for emergencies and failures.
• Overtime may be required to meet business needs.
• Travel requirement: up to 25% travel expected.
• Relocation assistance: not eligible for this role.
• Remote work: this position is not available for remote working.
