About the Role

The Dialysis RN Lead, under the supervision of their manager, is responsible for implementing education programs for dialysis staff and onboarding new colleagues. This role provides leadership, serves as a subject matter expert ensuring regulatory standards are followed, and acts as a preceptor and active member of the healthcare team. The Lead Dialysis RN ensures staff education and adherence to clinical practice guidelines, coordinates staff scheduling, oversees department document control, and provides supervisory coverage in the manager's absence.

This role also delivers professional nursing care to patients with kidney conditions requiring dialysis, including reviewing patient histories, administering medications, performing dialysis treatments, and monitoring patients during dialysis. The Lead Dialysis RN oversees operations at both FMC/VVMC, runs water testing quality results, prepares quality reports, and coordinates educational needs and onboarding.

Responsibilities

• Address patient and family concerns, communicate issues and solutions through appropriate channels.
• Document incidents, events, interventions, and patient/staff/physician responses.
• Serve as a patient advocate and prioritize problem-solving to meet changes in patient status.
• Collaborate with physicians and healthcare professionals to ensure appropriate staffing patterns and skill mix for quality patient care.
• Quickly and accurately assess patient care needs and serve as a liaison with patients, physicians, and other departments.
• Maintain compliance with Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA).
• Serve as a resource for staff and assist physicians with order entry into the EMR.
• Monitor and document the status of vascular accesses using proper cannulation or central venous catheter techniques.
• Document patient observations and seek guidance when levels are out of normal range.
• Obtain blood samples per hospital policy and send them to the lab as needed.
• Oversee setup and monitoring of dialysis machines and reverse osmosis water systems, respond to alarms, and perform safety checks.
• Manage staffing for current and next shifts, determine appropriate staff levels, and address workflow issues.
• Ensure incidents are documented and corrective steps are taken.
• Demonstrate knowledge of NAH and department policies and procedures.
• Participate in or lead process improvement initiatives.
• Assist in hiring, orientation, and training of new staff, ensuring best practices are followed.
• Maintain logs, quality reports, policies, and procedures.
• Ensure staff accountability, monitor performance, and provide constructive feedback.
• Collaborate with physicians and other healthcare professionals to identify performance improvement opportunities.
• Recognize employees for strong performance and improvements.
• Collaborate with the clinical manager on employee performance evaluations.
• Report safety-related incidents in a timely manner and ensure compliance with safety regulations.
• Stay current with state and federal regulations and company policies.
• Ensure all certifications and licenses are up-to-date and valid.
• Complete mandatory training modules within specified time frames.
• Demonstrate and utilize guidelines of care and practice in accordance with Arizona State Board of Nursing Laws and Regulations.
