Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (Ultrasound)

This position is located at the Blackfeet Service Unit within the Indian Health Service and reports to the Supervisory Diagnostic Radiology Technologist or designee. A REAL ID will be required beginning May 7, 2025, in accordance with 6 C.F.R. 37.5 (2021). Prior to appointment, candidates must present two valid forms of identification. A housing subsidy of up to $792 for GS-8 and up to $900 for GS-9 per pay period may be available.

Duties

• Performs comprehensive abdominal, obstetric/gynecologic, vascular, and soft tissue sonographic studies.
• Independently selects appropriate transducers and imaging parameters.
• Identifies normal and abnormal findings, selects representative images, and records exam results in radiology systems for radiologist interpretation.
• Operates and maintains ultrasound systems.

This position is covered by a Bargaining Unit. On-call hours or standby duty may be required.

Requirements

• U.S. Citizenship is required.
• Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
• This is a designated position covered by Public Law 101-630, requiring contact or control over Indian children. Applicants must not have been found guilty of or pleaded nolo contendere or guilty to certain crimes.
• Must comply with the IHS Employee Immunization Policy related to vaccine-preventable diseases, consistent with recommendations for healthcare workers. Vaccine exemption requests may be available.
• Successful completion of a federal background investigation is required as a condition of employment.

Basic Requirements

Public Law 97-35 requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75. Applicants must:

• Have successfully completed an educational program accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education, and
• Be certified as radiographers in their field.

The following meet these requirements:

• Persons employed by the Federal Government as radiologic personnel prior to January 13, 1986, who show evidence of current or fully satisfactory performance or certification.
• Persons first employed after January 13, 1986, who received training or practiced in a State or foreign jurisdiction that did not accredit training or license the field at the time, provided they show evidence of training, experience, and competence.

Minimum Qualifications

GS-08: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-7 grade level performing the following:

• Perform ultrasound imaging under supervision.
• Prepare patients for ultrasound procedures.
• Document procedures and store images.

GS-09: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-8 grade level performing the following:

• Perform diagnostic ultrasound examinations in accordance with established clinical protocols and departmental procedures.
• Obtain and evaluate high-quality sonographic images.
• Verify examination orders.
• Maintain ultrasound equipment and perform routine quality-control activities.

Education

This position has an education requirement. Submit a copy of your transcripts or a list of courses including titles, credit hours completed, and grades. Unofficial transcripts will be accepted in the application package; official transcripts will be required prior to receiving an official offer. Only attendance and/or degrees from schools accredited by accrediting institutions recognized by the U.S. Department of Education may be credited. For foreign education, a Certificate of Foreign Equivalency must be provided.
