Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) - a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment.

Basic Requirements

  • United States Citizenship: Be a citizen of the United States(Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.)
  • English Language Proficiency: DRTs appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C.7403(f)
  • Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program - evidenced by a certificate or associate degree - accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education(DOE)]
  • Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology - Radiography (ARRT)(R)Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) - [or Mammograph (M) duties performed independently and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination]

Grade Determinations

  • In addition to the basic requirements for appointment - the following criteria must be used when determining the appropriate grade assignment of candidates:
  • Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist GS-9: Experience: This position requires you have at least 1 year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-8) that demonstrates the following clinical competencies needed to provide services for this specialty area - as follows: Checking scanners for operation - assess acceptable performance based on established guidelinesCalibrating parameters and make adjustments as neededReviewing patient's clinical record - diagnosis - and laboratory resultsMonitoring patient's physiologic changes during the procedure and keep the radiologist informedUsing tact - diplomacy - and courtesy in dealings with the customers - patients - staff - family - visitors - and volunteersUnderstanding of anatomy and physiology - and cross-sectional anatomy - recognizing unusual images - and determining proper positioning to best demonstrate areas of interestDemonstrated Knowledge - Skills and Abilities: In addition to the experience above - The candidate must demonstrate all of the following technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*): Knowledge - Skills and Abilities: *Ability to balance the needs of patients and staff while still performing complex scans and proceduresKnowledge of techniques for gathering relevant information from the medical record - significant others - and health care providers*Ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedureKnowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiographyKnowledge of physical assessment - aseptic techniques - intravenous methods and techniques and universal precautionsKnowledge of pre-procedural - procedural - and post-procedural care of patients

Duties

The duties of this position include but are not limited to:

  • Operating the super conductive Magnetic Resonance Imager (MRI) - a highly complex computerized imaging device which employs the use of strong magnetic fields and radio waves to acquire images
  • Preparing magnet for daily operation - bringing they system up and checking all self calibrating parameters
  • Maintaining the cleanliness of the assigned work area
  • Maintaining necessary supplies in the work area
  • Reporting all shortages or equipment failure to the supervisor
  • Observing patient safety guidelines as set forth in department and Medical Center policies and procedures
  • Monitoring all equipment brought into the MRI environment to ensure it is MRI sage or MRI compatible
  • Actively seeking out work when assigned tasks are finished
  • Proactively identifying administrative - clinical or mechanical problems - and defining solutions
  • Advising the Radiologist of those examinations which require immediate attention while the patient is still undergoing the examination
  • Practicing sterile techniques to prevent contamination
  • Performing the associated DHCP - CPRS GUI and imaging network responsibilities that relate to a patient examination and the patient's record

  • This position is a Part-Time at 16 hours per week (Saturdays and Sundays)

Pay

  • Competitive salary and regular salary increases
  • When setting pay - a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade)
