Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist
About the role
The incumbent performs a wide variety of routine to complex diagnostic radiology, fluoroscopic x-ray, and surgery fluoroscopic exams. These exams aim to achieve proper diagnosis and treatment of veterans. Duties include scheduling exams, performing portable radiographic examinations, and preparing and administering contrast materials.
Responsibilities
- Schedules exams to optimize scanner times while accommodating emergency cases.
- Performs portable, general radiographic examinations within the facility.
- Verifies regions of interest for reporting additional information, evaluates quality of measurements, and recommends additional scans as necessary.
- Adheres to hospital infection control and safety policies, including sterile technique and handling of body fluids and 'sharps.'
- Prepares and administers contrast materials under the direction of the radiologist/provider, obtaining patient consent when necessary.
- Monitors patient's physiologic changes during the procedure and keeps the radiologist informed.
- Ensures radiation safety to reduce exposure to patients, staff, and self.
Requirements
The incumbent must have knowledge, skills, and abilities in anatomy and physiology, cross-sectional anatomy, recognizing unusual images, and determining proper positioning. They must also have the ability to check system operation, adjust as needed, monitor patient changes, and maintain professional demeanor.
Qualifications
- Certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT).
- Completion of a full-time training course in diagnostic radiologic technology, accredited by JRCERT or recognized by the DOE.
- Proven experience in radiologic technology practice, including checking system operation, adjusting calibration parameters, monitoring patient changes, and maintaining professional conduct.
- Knowledge of anatomy and physiology, cross-sectional anatomy, recognizing unusual images, and determining proper positioning.
Skills
The incumbent should possess strong interpersonal skills, including tact, diplomacy, and courtesy, and should be proficient in written and spoken English.

Qualifications
- At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level demonstrating the clinical competencies described at that level.
- Knowledge of current radiologic technology practice.
- Quality of experience as a DRT, including working knowledge of digital image quality adjustment, contrast material requirements, radiation protection standards, and PACS.
- Ability to check system operation, assess performance, adjust calibration parameters, monitor patient changes, and maintain professional conduct.
