About the role
Joe V’s Smart Shop, a Division of H-E-B, operates 9 stores in the Greater Houston area with annual sales over $320 million. As a Meat Cutter I, you’ll help provide the freshest quality products for customers through a well-stocked and maintained department while delivering great customer service. You’ll cut, prepare, tray, and merchandise fresh product daily, ensuring all department and food safety standards are met.
Responsibilities
- Cuts, trims, and trays meat for display according to company standards
- Operates grinder, saw, knife sharpener, tenderizer, and slicer
- Weighs, wraps, and labels product packages for sale
- Rotates product in meat cooler and sales floor; ensures proper storage practices
- Communicates consistently to maintain the highest quality and freshness standards
- Generates production lists and scans re-works
- Practices safety awareness and safely performs meat cutting duties
- Performs other cross-functional market duties as needed
- Provides great customer service by cutting meat appropriately, labeling correctly, and keeping shelves stocked
- Cleans and sanitizes display cases; properly operates and maintains equipment
- Complies with department/store operating procedures and federal/state regulations
Requirements
- 18 years or older
- Retail market or food experience preferred
- Knowledge of all JVSS Meat Cutter training aids and SOPs
- Understanding of product rotation, department/store sanitation, and shrink awareness
- Strong communication and customer service skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and shift focus between tasks
- Ability to practice safety awareness and safely perform meat cutting duties
- Ability to work a flexible schedule and demonstrate initiative
Qualifications
- Successful completion of and certification from Meat Cutting Academy
Physical Demands & Working Conditions
- Function in a fast-paced, retail environment with detailed and precise tasks
- Constantly stand, reach at waist, and grasp
- Constantly exposed to cold (non-weather) conditions
- Frequently exposed to wet (non-weather) conditions
- Frequently push/pull with arms and make movements with ulnar deviation
- Occasionally walk, reach overhead, reach at shoulder/knee/floor, bend, stoop, squat, crouch, kneel, climb stairs, pivot, twist, pinch, and use fine motor movements
- Occasionally exposed to loud noise, fumes, airborne particles, and toxic or caustic materials
- Safely maneuver around moving mechanical parts
- Ability to lift 90 lbs and manage in excess of 90 lbs (with assistance or breaking down items as needed)
Measurements are defined as: Constantly (5.5+ hours per 8-hour day), Frequently (2.5–5.5 hours), Occasionally (0–2.5 hours).
