Development Manager

About the role

The Institute for Justice & Democracy in Haiti (IJDH) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to enforcing the human rights of Haitians both in Haiti and the US. The Development Manager plays a crucial role in advancing IJDH and its sister organization, the Haitian-led Bureau des Avocats Internationaux (BAI), through strategic fundraising efforts.

Responsibilities

  • Fundraising Planning
  • Identify opportunities to improve fundraising systems, processes, and donor engagement.
  • Manage a portfolio of foundation funding opportunities through the full grant cycle.
  • Write, coordinate, and edit grant proposals, reports, and other institutional fundraising materials.
  • Track grant deadlines, reporting requirements, and funder communications to ensure timely follow-up and compliance.
  • Build and maintain relationships with institutional funders in partnership with IJDH leadership.
  • Conduct prospect research and identify new funding opportunities.
  • Individual Giving & Donor Communications
  • Coordinate annual and special fundraising campaigns, including year-end appeals, digital fundraising.
  • Support cultivation, stewardship, and solicitation of individual donors, including major donors.
  • Work with program staff to identify compelling stories, program updates, and impact data for fundraising and donor communications.
  • Data & Development Operations
  • Maintain and continually improve the organization's donor database and fundraising systems.
  • Generate reports and analyze fundraising data to support planning, decision-making, and donor engagement.
  • Help strengthen fundraising systems, workflows, and technology to improve fundraising effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Maintain organized electronic files and documentation.
  • Project Management
  • Collaborate with communications, finance, and program staff to prepare fundraising materials.
  • Support planning and logistics for fundraising events or donor engagement activities, as needed.
  • Relationship Management
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with donors, foundation representatives, consultants, volunteers, and organizational partners.
  • Represent the organization professionally in meetings, events, and donor interactions.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 2-4 years of experience in nonprofit fundraising or related fields.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Demonstrated experience writing grant proposals, reports, and other fundraising materials.
  • Experience managing multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and/or Google Workspace.
  • Authorization to work in the United States.
  • Preferred: Experience building and managing a portfolio of donors, demonstrated success closing gifts and securing foundation commitments, experience supervising staff, interns, or volunteers, experience using Bloomerang or a comparable donor database (CRM), familiarity with fundraising budgets and grant financial reporting, proficiency or background in spoken Haitian Creole and knowledge of Haitian culture.

  • Comfort learning and using new technologies and AI-enabled productivity tools to improve efficiency and fundraising effectiveness.

Physical & Work Requirements

  • Ability to work at a computer for extended periods.
  • Availability for occasional (not regular) evening or weekend work preferred.
