The Detroit AmeriCorps Youth Success (DAYS) Program is an academic intervention and support program designed to reduce chronic absenteeism and improve student engagement among 1st–8th grade students in Detroit-area schools. Students and families may experience barriers that impact consistent school attendance, including housing instability, transportation challenges, and limited access to basic needs and other resources. AmeriCorps Volunteers serve as Youth Success Coaches within partner schools, working alongside students, families, school staff, and attendance teams. Using mentoring, academic support, family engagement, resource connection, and the Check & Connect model, Volunteers build relationships with students, monitor attendance patterns, help students develop problem-solving skills, and connect families with resources that can help address barriers to regular attendance. Through consistent school-based service, AmeriCorps Volunteers provide students with an additional caring adult and strengthen connections between families, schools, and community resources. Volunteers also participate in professional development, national service activities, and community service projects throughout their service term.
