Detention Deputy (On-site)

Pay

Typical starting salary: $72,716.80 annually ($34.96 per hour). Salary range: $34.96 to $49.09 per hour ($72,716.80 to $102,107.20 annually). Lateral wage consideration for experienced candidates.

Schedule

This position requires working weekends, holidays, and a 24/7 rotational schedule at the Anoka County Jail.

Responsibilities

• Monitor and supervise jail inmates and related activities to maintain security and safety
• Maintain facility security through surveillance of cameras, alarms, doors, and security controls
• Enforce rules and facility regulations while interacting with inmates
• Conduct inmate counts, searches, and prevent contraband introduction
• Respond to emergencies (disturbances, fires, escape attempts, medical situations) and restore order
• Mediate conflicts and de-escalate tension among inmates
• Handle intake and release of inmates, including verifying documentation
• Supervise recreational and visiting periods
• Monitor at-risk inmates (mental illness, addiction) and supervise court appearances
• Prepare written reports and log activities

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Must be at least 18 years of age
• Valid driver’s license
• Ability to credibly testify in court
• Must pass a thorough physical and psychological examination and background investigation
• No unauthorized tattoos (head, face, neck, or hands prohibited; exceptions may apply)

Preferred Qualifications

• Secondary education in corrections, law enforcement, criminal justice, or behavioral/social science
• Evidence-Based Practice Corrections Professional Certification
• Experience with de-escalation techniques in a work setting
• Knowledge of CPR principles and Advanced First Aid certification
• Strong verbal and written communication skills

Physical Demands

• Work in correctional/detention environments, including contact with potentially hostile or dangerous individuals
• Vision, hearing, and cognitive abilities required for safety and performance (e.g., computer work, interpreting documents, problem-solving)
• Physical activity including reaching, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling
• Periodic high exertion (self-defense, pursuit, restraint) and ability to lift over 100 lbs. in emergencies
• Use of law enforcement equipment (radios, handcuffs, restraints, chemical agents, Tasers, protective gear)
• Exposure to bodily fluids, chemicals, fumes, or other hazards
• Travel between work sites (county or personal vehicle)

About the Role

The Anoka County Sheriff's Office seeks a Detention Deputy to support its mission of protecting and serving the community while preserving public trust. This role involves direct supervision of inmates to ensure secure, safe, and humane confinement.

This position is represented by a collective bargaining agreement between Anoka County and the LELS - Detention Deputy union. Pre-employment requirements include passing a criminal/driving background check, drug screen, DOT physical, and other qualifications checks.
