About the role
Reporting directly to the Engineering Project Lead, the Designer Engineering performs design work under the supervision of a Sr. Designer, Design Lead, and/or Project Lead. You will produce manufacturing and customer drawings with accuracy, along with Bills of Material related to the company's products, adhering to the latest company design standards, industry specifications, and customer requirements using designated CAD/CAM software (MicroStation, SolidWorks, and NX) and SAP (ERP).
Responsibilities
- Abide by all customer and Nortrak safety policies and procedures while on customer and Nortrak sites.
- Ensure design specifications of drawings meet customer and Nortrak safety standards.
- Produce practical designs and other design components (BOMs, ITPs, etc.) for tooling and Nortrak products with a high degree of accuracy, considering application, manufacture, and service requirements, customer and Nortrak standards, and industry best practices.
- Stay current with company manufacturing processes and product/industry knowledge.
- Develop knowledge of Nortrak products, customer and Nortrak standards, and industry state of practice.
- Be aware of design standards and assigned customers.
- Work closely with Manufacturing to address design/manufacturability issues.
- Assist and/or create Customer Requests for Information (RFI) to clarify project information, including relevant details, customer specifications, and required details.
- Assist and/or create customer submittals for projects.
- Update and revise drawings and BOMs as needed or directed.
- Self-check work for accuracy before submitting designs for official checking and approval.
- Maximize time utilization to complete projects accurately and meet department and company commitment dates.
- Create project pre-orders and long lead-time items to meet project delivery dates, updating throughout the project as needed.
- Understand and meet due dates for assigned tasks and contribute to milestones.
- Work within well-established practices and clearly defined scope of work.
- Cooperate with Nortrak Management to produce designs efficiently, on budget, and with a high degree of manufacturability.
- Understand and manage budgeted hours per assigned task.
- Share information and encourage other team members.
- Develop close working relationships with internal and external customers and suppliers.
- Assist production with technical questions, support, guidance, and problem-solving.
- Work closely with more senior staff on projects of minimal complexity under close supervision.
- Adhere to Nortrak's Environmental Procedures, Practices, and Policies.
Requirements
- Post-secondary education with a diploma or degree in an appropriate Engineering discipline.
- Three to five years of experience in the engineering field.
- Experience working in a manufacturing environment is an asset.
- Knowledge of materials and casting processes related to the company's manufactured products.
- Knowledge of Finite Element Analysis (NX Simcenter) preferred.
- Detailed knowledge in CAD, preferably NX and MicroStation.
- SAP knowledge is an asset.
- Strong interpersonal skills and effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work as a project team member.
- Ability to prioritize and execute multiple tasks efficiently.
- Familiarity with Siemens Teamcenter is an asset.
Physical Demands
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer; occasional standing and walking for your scheduled shift.
- Must remain stationary for extended periods and move throughout the building to access files.
- Must work effectively in a noisy environment.
- Ability to lift and move equipment or objects up to 20-25 pounds occasionally.
- Visual requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Frequent use of hands and arms for dialing phones and using a computer mouse.
