About the role
The Designer at QXO, Inc. is responsible for creating accurate and detailed product designs, shop drawings, and manufacturing documentation based on customer plans, specifications, and project requirements. This role partners closely with Sales, Estimating, Production, Purchasing, and Operations to develop designs that are accurate, manufacturable, and compliant with applicable building codes and company quality standards. The Designer supports projects from initial concept through production while ensuring customer expectations, quality requirements, and project timelines are successfully achieved.
Responsibilities
- Create and revise product designs based on customer plans, specifications, and project requirements
- Read and interpret blueprints, architectural drawings, construction documents, and technical specifications
- Produce accurate shop drawings, manufacturing drawings, and production documentation
- Create and maintain bills of material (BOMs), cut lists, and production specifications when applicable
- Verify dimensions, tolerances, hardware locations, material specifications, glass requirements, and construction details
- Ensure designs comply with applicable building codes, engineering standards, and company manufacturing requirements
- Review completed designs for accuracy, completeness, constructability, and manufacturability
- Process design revisions and maintain revision history throughout the lifecycle of each project
- Communicate with customers and internal teams regarding design details, revisions, approvals, and project requirements
- Coordinate with Sales to clarify customer needs and recommend practical design solutions
- Verify project details prior to production or shipment to ensure accuracy
- Maintain organized project documentation, design files, and engineering records
- Track project priorities and manage multiple design projects simultaneously
- Cross-functional Collaboration:
- Partner with Production, Purchasing, Quality, Operations, and Estimating teams throughout the project lifecycle
- Coordinate with Purchasing regarding material specifications, hardware, glass, and specialty components
- Support CNC programming, fabrication, and manufacturing by providing accurate production documentation where applicable
- Troubleshoot design and production issues while providing timely technical support
- Aid in prototype development, product improvements, value engineering, and continuous improvement initiatives
- Assist with production planning and project review meetings to support efficient manufacturing
- Quality & Continuous Improvement:
- Identify and resolve design issues in a timely manner
- Support continuous improvement of design processes, workflows, and manufacturing efficiency
- Collaborate with other Designers and engineering team members on shared projects and priorities
- Assist with training and mentoring new team members as needed
Requirements
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, architectural drawings, and technical documents
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking abilities
- Excellent communication and customer service skills
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines effectively
- Team-oriented mindset with the ability to collaborate across multiple departments
- Experience in drafting, product design, engineering support, or manufacturing environments
- Proficiency with CAD software and industry-specific design programs
- Associate degree or higher in Drafting, Engineering Technology, Architecture, Construction Management, or related field preferred
- Experience designing building materials, millwork, doors, windows, trusses, cabinetry, structural components, or related products
- Experience creating shop drawings, bills of material (BOMs), cut lists, and production documentation
- Knowledge of building codes, construction methods, structural systems, and manufacturing processes
- Experience with AutoCAD, MiTek, Alpine, SolidWorks, Inventor, Revit, or similar CAD software depending on business unit
- Experience supporting manufacturing and production operations preferred
Qualifications
- Primarily office-based work environment with regular collaboration across Sales, Estimating, Production, Purchasing, Quality, and Operations teams
- Frequent visits to manufacturing and production facilities to support fabrication, troubleshoot design questions, and verify product requirements
- Frequent visits to manufacturing areas to work in a flexible, fast-paced environment
- Ability to sit and work at a computer for extended periods
- Ability to walk production floors and wear required PPE when visiting manufacturing areas
- Exposure to manufacturing environments, including machinery, noise, dust, and varying temperatures during shop visits
- Flexibility to work extended hours when required to meet project deadlines and customer commitments

Schedule
Mainly office-based work environment with occasional visits to manufacturing and production facilities.
