About the Role

We are seeking a Distribution Designer to support electric and gas utility distribution projects, with a primary focus on work within the PEPCO service territory. This position is responsible for developing detailed, construction-ready utility designs using CAD and utility-specific software while ensuring compliance with client requirements, utility standards, and regulatory guidelines. This role offers the opportunity to join a growing engineering organization that is expanding into larger and more complex projects, including commercial developments, mixed-use communities, and multi-unit residential projects. The ideal candidate enjoys technical design work, collaborating with project teams, and contributing to high-quality utility infrastructure solutions in a hybrid work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Utility Design & Documentation
    • Develop electric and gas distribution designs for residential, commercial, and development projects using MicroStation, Geographic Work Designer (GWD), and other utility-specific platforms.
    • Prepare detailed design packages and construction-ready drawings that align with utility standards, client expectations, and regulatory requirements.
    • Perform distribution design work utilizing PEPCO processes, tools, and design standards.
    • Use AS8 (Asset Suite 8) and Geographic Work Designer (GWD) to model utility assets, manage work orders, and maintain accurate project documentation.
    • Review designs for accuracy, completeness, and constructability, implementing revisions as needed to support project success.
  • Project Coordination & Communication
    • Collaborate with engineers, project managers, utility representatives, and other stakeholders to define project requirements and design solutions.
    • Coordinate project activities to ensure alignment with scope, schedules, and operational objectives.
    • Communicate project updates, design recommendations, and technical information to clients and internal teams.
    • Assist in resolving design challenges and support project teams in meeting deadlines and quality expectations.
  • Project Delivery & Continuous Improvement
    • Manage priorities and workload independently while working within a hybrid environment.
    • Contribute to larger and more complex utility development projects, including commercial sites and multi-unit residential communities.
    • Support continuous improvement initiatives by sharing feedback on design processes, workflows, and technology tools.
    • Maintain a high standard of reliability, accuracy, and professionalism across all project assignments.

Requirements

  • 2 to 5 years of experience in electric and/or gas utility distribution design.
  • Experience supporting projects within the PEPCO service territory and familiarity with PEPCO standards and procedures.
  • Hands-on experience using Geographic Work Designer (GWD).
  • Proficiency with MicroStation or similar CAD software used for utility design and drafting.
  • Experience developing utility distribution designs for residential and commercial development projects.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage deadlines effectively in a hybrid work setting.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate across engineering teams, utility stakeholders, clients, and project staff.
  • Proven problem-solving abilities and the capability to identify and resolve design-related issues.
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and commitment to producing quality work.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate degree in Engineering Technology, Drafting, Design, or a related field.
  • Direct experience working within PEPCO proprietary systems and processes.
  • Strong familiarity with PEPCO territory and utility infrastructure requirements.
  • Experience using AS8 (Asset Suite 8) for utility asset and work management.
  • Background supporting gas distribution system projects.
  • Experience with AutoCAD or other CAD platforms in addition to MicroStation.
  • Previous client-facing experience, including discussing technical designs and responding to project-related questions.
  • Interest in professional growth within a fast-paced engineering and utility environment.
