About the role
This position is responsible for advancing the Meijer brand by producing groundbreaking creative across the customer journey for large-scale paid media marketing touchpoints. The Designer I is primarily accountable for creative development and execution of the print and digital Weekly Ads, including ideation, creative development, and execution of projects and marketing campaigns as part of Meijer’s Retail Media Network.
Working from a style guide, the Designer I produces original and creative ideas and art to capture customer attention through a variety of media, including but not limited to in-store signage, print, and digital media. The role requires versatility in relevant graphic design and web software, a working knowledge of branding principles (layout, color theory, and typography), and a desire to understand retail and the fast pace of change to create exceptional customer-focused promotions.
Responsibilities
- Successfully integrate original creative ideas and strategically design new concepts that flex seamlessly across different types of media to build cohesive campaigns and customer-facing artwork.
- Navigate the shift from print to digital ad development, leveraging guidelines for planning while producing end designs customized each week to drive business forward.
- Conceptualize original and creative customer communication ideas and bring them to life by partnering cross-functionally with Associate Design Managers, Senior Designers, Designer II/III, Photography, and Copywriters.
- Understand Meijer brand standards and creative style guides, using them as inspiration to produce unique, impactful work across the customer journey and various media touchpoints.
- Leverage knowledge to interpret how to design and amplify key messages, organizing a story for customers.
- Fully understand client deliverables and take responsibility for them.
- Develop campaigns across media types (e.g., .com/mobile, social, radio, OOH, video), with a potential focus on promotional design, ad development, or digital design.
- Simplify complex challenges into simple, compelling customer messaging and creative.
- Perform well under pressure, managing multiple projects of varying complexity against daily deadlines while ensuring design output accuracy and handling edits.
- Negotiate change requests with Marketing, Merchandising, or third-party vendor teams to modify designs while ensuring they remain customer-friendly and within Meijer brand standards.
- Effectively present creative concepts to large audiences, listening and adapting concepts based on feedback.
- Translate creative feedback from various levels of leadership into actionable refinements while keeping Meijer brand standards and the customer top of mind.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree required in a related field.
- 2+ years of experience in graphic design.
- Understanding of and experience in corporate branding, including objectives, defining tone, layout, color theory, and typography in signage, print, and digital media.
- Fluency in current graphic design software, such as Adobe Creative Suite.
- Proactive self-starter with the ability to be both a conceptual and conscientious creative thinker.
- Understanding of art direction principles for photography.
- Excellent communication, prioritization, and time management skills within a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
- Ability to multitask on many projects across business types with varying levels of art direction.
- Awareness of design trends and a natural talent to adapt them to customer-facing graphic design.
- Versed in relevant graphic design and web software packages.
