Design Technician - Plumbing
Job Summary
Design Technician I supports the design and drafting of plumbing, HVAC, and electrical systems for multi-family new construction projects. This entry-level position works under the direction of senior designers and engineers to produce accurate, code-compliant design documents, construction drawings, and coordination layouts using CAD and BIM software.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in preparing detailed MEP design drawings for multi-family residential buildings, including layouts for plumbing, HVAC, and electrical systems.
- Develop and update AutoCAD and Revit models under the supervision of senior design staff.
- Cook up coordination with architectural, structural, and other engineering disciplines to ensure system integration and constructability.
- Perform basic calculations and data entry for load sizing, pipe sizing, duct layout, and circuiting as directed.
- Maintain and organize project files, drawing sets, and revision logs.
- Review design documents for accuracy and compliance with company standards, local codes, and project requirements.
- Participate in project coordination meetings and support field teams by responding to design-related inquiries through collaboration and BIM coordination, quality control and clash detection.
- Learn and apply relevant codes and standards, such as UPC, UMC, NEC, and local building codes.
- Provide administrative and technical support to senior engineers and project managers as needed.
- Support QA/QC reviews of design documents for accuracy and constructability.
Qualifications
- Education & Experience:
- Associate degree or certificate in Mechanical, Electrical, or Architectural Engineering Technology, Building Systems Design, or related field or willingness to obtain.
- Autodesk Certifications (CAD, REVIT, Navisworks, Bluebeam) preferred.
- 0–2 years of experience in MEP design, drafting, or construction preferred.
- Skills & Competencies:
- Drafting proficiency in AutoCAD & Revit required; experience BIM workflows preferred.
- Basic understanding of MEP systems and how they interact in building design.
- Ability to read and interpret construction documents and specifications.
- Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to meet deadlines.
- Eagerness to learn and grow within a collaborative, fast-paced team environment.
- Problem-solving and adaptability to various project needs.
