Design Team Leader (Engineering Manager I)
UDOT is seeking a skilled Design Team Leader (Engineering Manager I) to lead our Region Three design group in Orem, Utah.
About the role
As the Design Team Leader, you will provide technical leadership, team supervision, and oversight across roadway design projects to ensure on-time, high-quality project delivery.
Location: UDOT Region Three, 658 N 1500 W, Orem, UT 84057
Schedule: Full-time, career-service exempt
Pay: $46.67 - $74.06/hour
Responsibilities
- Lead and mentor design and rotational engineers—fostering technical growth, managing workloads, and evaluating performance.
- Drive project delivery by overseeing project schedules and execution for both internal and consultant-led roadway design initiatives.
- Champion quality and standards by ensuring all design deliverables meet quality control/assurance (QA/QC) goals and serving on statewide committees to shape future design manuals and industry standards.
- Collaborate and select by evaluating and selecting consultant engineering firms, overseeing their work products, and serving as the primary liaison across internal divisions, partner agencies, and external stakeholders.
- Maintain expertise by staying current on evolving industry standards, tools, and technical best practices.
Requirements
- Active registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in the State of Utah or an active PE license in another U.S. state with the ability to obtain Utah PE reciprocity prior to start date.
- Minimum of two (2) years of professional engineering experience following initial PE licensure.
- Demonstrated background in roadway design with a thorough command of standard AASHTO and state DOT design principles.
- Strong leadership, communication, and project management abilities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Direct experience applying UDOT design criteria, reference manuals, standard drawings, and project delivery procedures.
- Experience supervising, mentoring, or guiding engineers or technical staff, including overseeing work delivery and supporting career development.
