PURPOSE

Aids the Design Manager in overseeing the design team to ensure drawings are accurate and completed on time. Schedules work assignments. Reviews and approves drawings. Trains new designers.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Supervises employees using computer-assisted engineering and design software to perform engineering and design tasks.
  • Schedules and oversees the layout of design work to ensure timely completion.
  • Originates and checks layout and design drawings for structural wood products.
  • Reviews new orders and estimates completion times.
  • Sets design pricing.
  • Assists truss technicians to ensure product geometry, structural integrity, and economy.
  • Records and tracks design errors according to company policy.
  • Holds meetings with designers to discuss design issues and prevent future errors.
  • Performs some layout and design work daily.
  • Monitors lead times and coordinates shifting of design work with other designers.
  • Communicates with contractors, sales representatives, and building designers as needed to complete drawings.
  • Administers new employee training to ensure familiarity with company products and processes.
  • Reviews work generated.

Minimum Requirements

  • Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school.
  • Two (2) years related experience and/or training.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Previous supervisory and design experience required.
  • Level 3 design certification required.

Competencies

  • Knowledge of wood frame construction.
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to handle multiple priorities.
  • Strong knowledge of selling within the building industry to maximize profit margins.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and an enterprise resource planning (ERP) program.

  • Sitting.
  • Standing and walking occasionally.
  • Lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Closing vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less).
