Design Manager
Job Summary
The purpose of the Design Manager position is to manage the design department at SFS location or district, including adhering to SFS's quality design procedures and work instructions.

Responsibilities
- Strong working knowledge of fire sprinkler codes.
- NICET III or NICET IV preferred. Equivalent experience will be considered if pursuing NICET education.
- Using SFS' Design Review Form, reviews and verifies designs and calculations prior to submittal.
- Assigns projects to designers based on workload demand and maintains design calendar.
- Ensures field checks are completed and projects are listed for materials accurately and on time.
- Participates in design kick-off, WPR meetings.
- In conjunction with the SFS technology manager, maintain design systems and software.
- Helps coordinate material delivery to job sites.
- Affords assistance to sales/estimating personnel in estimating design hours for bids.
- Affords assistance to design personnel in preparing for NICET tests and correspondence courses.
- Trains designers and design trainees on all applicable aspects of fire protection design.
- Maintains design department supplies.
- Designs automatic sprinkler systems including fire pumps, tanks, wet, dry, pre-action, and deluge systems using working knowledge of fire sprinkler codes.
- Communicates with internal and external customers in a professional manner.
- Reviews all design employees per company policy.
- Understands and follows SFS's Safety program, SDS book, Hazardous communication program, policies and procedures.
Qualifications
- Education, Training, Certifications: HS Diploma or equivalent required. NICET II or NICET III and/or state required certification required.
- Experience, Knowledge, Skill Requirements: 10 years’ experience as sprinkler designer, required. Construction experience, preferred. Mechanical aptitude, preferred. Basic and advanced math skills, required. Communication Skills: Must have the ability to effectively read, write and communicate in English with employees and customers. Systems and Software Skills: Ability to operate a computer, use Microsoft Office required. Familiarity with HydraCad and/or other CAD software, preferred.
- Other Qualifications: Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record required. Must be able to comply with SFS’s Drug and Alcohol policy and Background screening requirements, which may also include customer specific requirements based on contractual agreement.
Physical & Work Environment Requirements
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit for long periods. Employee will occasionally be required to bend, kneel, balance, lift up to 20 lbs, walk, stand, ascend/descend stairs, drive, twist, and reach above and below shoulders. Employee will frequently be required to drive and walk for periods. Work Environment: Employee will consistently be required to work indoors in an office setting, work alone and with others. Employees will occasionally be required to work outside, and be exposed to hot/cold temperatures, dust, fumes, chemicals, electrical hazards and noise. Employee will be occasionally required to wear all appropriate personal protective equipment, as required by company safety policies while visiting locations.
