Design Engineer
Job Purpose
Designs, analyzes, tests, and validates products and subsystems for performance/reliability improvement and cost reduction. Supports manufacturing and field service for new and existing components and designs. Designs and supports manufacturing solutions and collaborates with other supporting groups to rapidly develop new applications for a wide range of various locomotive systems within assigned functional area.
Key Job Elements
- Supports production by diagnosing and solving problems with materials and processes to maintain or improve quality;
- Leads design reviews for assigned systems and participates in reviews for other systems; works with vendors and suppliers to specify new components and select appropriate components for designs; collaborates with engineers of other disciplines to integrate components into higher-level machinedesigns;
- Supports operations and service organizations in implementing and maintaining product through lifecycle; works closely with Operations, Maintenance, Quality, and supporting functions to identify and address any issues affecting productivity and quality;
- Responsible for new product development, manufacturing processes, and assembly methods; utilizes data to plan and strategize countermeasures for equipment and process issues;
- Remains current on engineering resources and new products/processes; completes assigned Required Learning modules;
Education/Training
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with 1-5+ years of experience (depending on position) in engineering, including experience in manufacturing, transportation, and/or machinery industries; hand tool experience; some engineering experience (mechanical/electrical).
Qualifications & Experience
- Proficiency in 2D and 3D CAD software; ability to accurately design, CAD and check a project with minimal supervision;
- Proficiency in computer programs relevant to assigned position, e.g., Matlab, PSIM, PLEX, NX Unigraphics, SAP, ERP LN 10.7, BAAN ERP, FEA, Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD 2D, and Progress Rail's specific programs and applications;
- Ability to read and understand specification and standards documents; proficient in interpreting and creating engineering drawings;
- Experience with project estimating and order management;
