Design Engineer

SRP division seeks a Design Engineer to create product designs, material specifications, and design documentation, potentially contributing to new product development. Familiarity with design procedures and manufacturing processes such as plastic molding and metal fabrication is essential. This role ensures compliance with design, manufacturing, federal, and customer requirements.

Responsibilities

• Create 2D and 3D models of assemblies, BOMs, and shop drawings using SolidWorks or CAD software
• Build and test prototypes, collaborating with contractors or vendors as needed
• Assist with materials pricing, vendor selection, and project estimating
• Evaluate current designs for cost-cutting and implement more efficient manufacturing methods (Value Engineering)
• Perform calculations to support proper material sizing and selection
• Analyze designs to ensure compliance with internal and external standards, including forces and loads
• Maintain complete bill of materials in the company ERP system
• Assist in developing and maintaining company design standards to streamline the engineering process
• Coordinate work of designers and other technical support personnel
• Perform project management tasks with minimal direction
• Communicate professionally and prudently with internal and external teams, including associates, customers, suppliers, and subcontractors

Requirements

• Engineering degree required (BSME, BS MET, or Civil/Structural background preferred)
• Minimum 2 years of experience in an Engineering/Design position
• Minimum 500+ hours of 2D and 3D modeling experience using SolidWorks (Pro-E, Inventor, AutoCAD, or similar experience also helpful)
• Experience creating shop drawings and working with document libraries
• Knowledge of welding and metal fabrication
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
• Hands-on approach with willingness to spend time in manufacturing or prototyping areas
• Ability to interact with a diverse population, including factory workers, supervisors, managers, and customers

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in roto-molded plastics design
• New Product Development experience (research, design, specification, procurement, documentation)
• Finite Element Analysis (FEA) experience
• Machine design experience
• Ability to perform structural analyses on steel frame structures
• Familiarity with building codes and ASTM standards
• Aluminum casting design experience
• Experience using a Product Data Management library and ERP system

Schedule

• May require light travel (up to 25%) to visit sites
• Overtime and flexible schedule, including early starts, late finishes, and occasional weekends
• After training, may be a hybrid position (office and remote) for standard work weeks

• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals
• Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
• Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees
• Strong problem-solving skills: define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
• Proficiency in SolidWorks or another 3D design suite for design work and layouts
• Ability to create reports and presentations using computer software
• Proficiency in 2-D and 3-D computer modeling for new product design
