Design Engineer

About the role

Helm is an AI CFO designed for startup founders. Our mission is to provide clear, live business insights and an AI analyst that simplifies financial questions.

Responsibilities

• Own product craft across Helm’s core experiences, including dashboards, forecasting, planning, onboarding, navigation, tables, and AI-assisted workflows.
• Build and evolve Helm’s design system, including tokens, components, interaction patterns, motion, and layout.
• Turn early ideas, customer problems, and product direction into polished, production-ready interfaces.
• Design for financial density, making it easy for founders to understand their business in seconds.
• Prototype in code, especially for motion and complex interactions.
• Partner closely with the founders, providing clear opinions, alternatives, and strong design judgment.
• Translate customer insights into product improvements.

Requirements

• Advanced proficiency in Figma (or comparable product design tools).
• Experience building and evolving design systems.
• Experience designing dense, data-rich interfaces.
• Experience using motion, gestures, and complex interactions to reduce cognitive load.
• Frontend fluency in React, TypeScript, HTML, and CSS.
• Fluency with AI coding tools and agents (Claude Code, Codex, and Cursor).
• Frontend ability to carry designs into production React/TypeScript, working closely with the CTO on deep technical work.

• Exceptional taste and a deep commitment to craft.
• Strong product judgment, grounded in customer needs.
• Comfort moving between design exploration and production code.
• A bias toward shipping, moving quickly without lowering the bar.

Skills
