Design Engineer

About the role

The Design Engineer is responsible for the execution of all facets of design engineering projects in support of Magnetic Seal throughout the product lifecycle—from concept design through production. This key project owner manages daily tasks within engineering services, supports product development from initial customer inquiries to legacy application issues, and drives key initiatives across business operations, including product material inquiries, manufacturing challenges, quality processes, and supply chain developments. This is an onsite role at our Warren, Rhode Island facility.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, implement, and analyze mechanical rotary face seals primarily for aerospace secondary power systems and adjacent markets.
• Perform 3D modeling, drawing creation, reverse engineering, FEA Simulation Analysis, and component selection.
• Develop and execute test plans, including test rig design, operation, and data collection.
• Evaluate products, parts, procedures, and processes for effectiveness and reliability.
• Research and analyze customer design proposals, specifications, and manuals to assess feasibility, cost, and maintenance requirements.
• Conduct field evaluations and reports on returned products to assess performance and identify issues.
• Collaborate with other departments, customers, and suppliers as required.
• Review and verify customer contracts for accuracy, completeness, and alignment with contractual terms.
• Provide engineering, manufacturing, and project management support.
• Recommend and implement process and product changes to support internal and external customers.
• Prepare data-driven engineering reports for internal and external customers.
• Follow in-house engineering processes and assist in creating and improving companywide process documentation.
• Attend industry trade shows and events to network, gather market insights, and identify opportunities for product development and business growth.
• Responsibly store and handle Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) to prevent unauthorized access or dissemination.
• Support visitor and security policies to protect ITAR/EAR/CMMC/CUI information and report any concerns immediately.
• Properly handle and manage hazardous waste generated in the work area.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from an ABET-accredited program or equivalent.
• 2–5 years of relevant experience in a related field, directly applicable to mechanical seals.
• Must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent resident; local to the Rhode Island facility.

Skills

• Experienced in 3D modeling and FEA using SolidWorks or equivalent systems.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office, engineering CAD (SolidWorks), FEA/FMEA, and project/time management software (e.g., Outlook).
• Experience testing mechanical rotary face seals or other mechanical equipment is highly desirable.
• Familiarity with sealing concepts, practices, and procedures; general knowledge of gearboxes, transmissions, and accessories is a plus.
• Knowledge of AS9100 and ITAR regulations preferred.
• Highly self-motivated with a persistent drive to achieve goals and objectives.
• Strong organizational skills with emphasis on attention to detail.
• Ability to learn software programs, run reports, and maintain accurate records.
• Ability to multitask and manage multiple priorities efficiently.
• Strong verbal, written, and interactive communication skills across all levels of employees, management, and business partners.
• Team-oriented with the ability to read, understand, and communicate internal procedures and policies.

• Use of basic hand tools for building, setup, adjustments, and maintenance of test rigs and other engineering equipment.

Work Environment

• Office and light manufacturing environment (climate-controlled).
• Test lab environment with exposure to moderate noise, vibration, oil-mist, and temperature variations.
• Onsite work per business needs and standard hours.
• Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required.
• Occasional travel may be required.
