Design/Construction Project Manager V - San Francisco CA

This technical/functional leader oversees all phases of the design and/or construction process for complex projects or series of projects, typically in the $100–150 million cumulative budget range. Responsibilities include defining project parameters, leading cross-functional teams, establishing and maintaining scope, budget, and schedule, and ensuring Kaiser Permanente’s client-service goals are met throughout design, construction, and close-out.

Responsibilities

• Provide guidance during all design stages of medical and regional facilities, including economic comparisons of development schemes and recommending options aligned with the master plan.
• Negotiate fees, review and approve consultant and contractor invoices and change orders, and engage with local and state jurisdictions.
• Lead and manage the timely procurement of all permits required by regulatory authorities.
• Supervise on-site design and/or construction teams and communicate project goals and status with KP leadership.
• Promote learning and collaboration by communicating information, providing actionable feedback, and mentoring junior team members.
• Adapt to competing demands, new responsibilities, and feedback while modeling teamwork within and across teams.
• Oversee business-specific projects by applying deep expertise, ensuring adherence to policies, and solving complex problems.
• Develop and manage complex project plans, including scope, schedule, inter-dependencies, and resource forecasts for multiple large-scale projects.
• Monitor project financials, performance (e.g., on time, on budget, within scope, and quality), and adjust as needed to ensure business benefits and outcomes.
• Lead organizational change management activities, including user adoption, implementation, and training plans.
• Allocate resources, establish schedules, and assign tasks to ensure project management best practices are followed.
• Monitor, identify, and mitigate project risks, issues, and trigger events, developing mitigation strategies and escalating as appropriate.
• Ensure project activities adhere to KP, departmental, and business-line policies and procedures.
• Align, engage, and secure buy-in from diverse project stakeholders through relationship-building and clear communication.
• Identify key stakeholders based on influence and decision-making authority, ensuring appropriate representation.
• Provide insight to stakeholders and sponsors by setting project goals, prioritizing deliverables, and facilitating decisions for project delivery.
• Communicate tough issues to stakeholders while maintaining independent recommendations and delivering formal presentations and reports.
• Review vendor performance, ensure service level agreements are met, and partner with Procurement/Legal to develop agreements.
• Participate in contract negotiations and review project invoices for accuracy.

Requirements

• Minimum five (5) years of experience in construction and/or design project management.
• Minimum three (3) years of experience in a leadership role with or without direct reports.
• Minimum three (3) years of experience implementing large, complex projects in a corporate, non-profit, or government environment.
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and minimum eight (8) years of experience in project management or a directly related field OR minimum eleven (11) years of experience in project management or a directly related field.

Preferred Qualifications

• Four (4) years of experience working in impact spending and sustainability.
• Four (4) years of experience working in an integrated healthcare delivery system.

Schedule

• Full-time, standard schedule.
• Workdays: Monday through Friday.
• Working hours: 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
• Travel: Up to 20% of the time.
• Work setting: Onsite (worker location must align with Kaiser Permanente’s Authorized States policy).

Pay

Pay range: $161,800 – $209,330 per year. Actual base pay determined at offer will be based on labor market data, internal alignment, and a candidate’s relevant work experience, education, certifications, skills, and geographic location.
