About the role
The Deputy Technology Officer plays a mission-critical leadership role at the helm of infrastructure and digital workplace operations. This is a highly influential, hands-on leadership role overseeing approximately 35 team members, including managers of systems operations, network/telecom, and the digital workplace.
Responsibilities
- Strategic Leadership & Innovation
- Partner with the CTO/CISO to define and operationalize long-term infrastructure and digital workplace strategies.
- Lead the development of strategic A3s for your division and drive execution across multiple initiatives.
- Maintain and evolve strategy maps for infrastructure functions.
- Stay current on workplace, infrastructure, and cloud trends; evaluate emerging technologies and integrate solutions aligned with business outcomes.
- Advance organizational resiliency initiatives, including preparedness for natural disasters, cyber threats, and system recovery.
- Team & Resource Leadership
- Lead a division of ~35 employees, including three managers and technical teams spanning networking, systems operations, and the digital workplace.
- Provide coaching, mentoring, and development pathways, especially for high-tenure teams with diverse viewpoints and skill sets.
- Foster a leadership culture centered on collaboration, listening, and frontline engagement—not top-down directive management.
- Support retention, succession planning, and healthy team dynamics.
- Oversee consultants and vendor relationships across reporting departments.
- Operational Excellence
- Ensure reliable, secure operation of all core IT infrastructure and services across cloud, on-prem, and hybrid environments.
- Oversee platforms including compute, storage, telecom, WAN, networking, endpoints, unified communications, Microsoft 365, collaboration tools, and digital workplace solutions.
- Manage capacity, resource allocation, and day-to-day service performance.
- Lead and mature disaster recovery processes and testing.
- Drive modernization of WAN technologies to increase resiliency and performance.
- Identify and remediate technical debt through proactive monitoring and structured assessments.
- Support the service desk through strong alignment, clear communication, and operational readiness.
- Financial & Vendor Management
- Oversee division budgets and capital planning activities.
- Lead cost-saving initiatives with measurable process and outcome metrics.
- Ensure vendors meet SLA expectations and deliver cost-effective, high-quality services.
- Security, Risk & Compliance
- Partner with Information Security to ensure all infrastructure and workplace platforms align with cybersecurity standards.
- Maintain compliance with regulatory and accrediting bodies (e.g., CMS, Joint Commission, HIPAA).
- Support organization-wide risk management practices and system hardening.
- Continuous Improvement
- Apply Lean/Kaizen methodologies to drive measurable improvements in operations, efficiency, and user experience.
- Act as a Lean Sensei for multiple team members, fostering a culture of learning and continuous improvement.
- Leadership On-Call
- Participate in the enterprise-wide IS leadership on-call rotation (approximately every 16 weeks).
- Provide high-level decision support for critical after-hours incidents and escalations.
Qualifications
- Master's degree.
- Eight years of professional experience within technology, preferably in a hospital or clinical setting.
- Five years of experience in management of complex projects and implementation of systems.
- Five years of experience managing projects and/or applications.
- Three years of manager or director-level experience.
