Deputy, Sheriff (Lateral Entry)

About the Role

Deputy Sheriffs perform field and office law enforcement duties. Responsibilities include:

• Patrolling assigned areas as uniformed or non-uniformed officers
• Transporting mentally ill persons to appropriate institutions
• Serving Court Orders and investigating violations of law
• Apprehending violators and gathering/preserving evidence
• Appearing as court witnesses and carrying out evictions under Court Order
• Replevining property, collecting delinquent taxes, and conducting Sheriff's sales
• Investigating accidents, rendering aid to the public, and making reports
• Booking, guarding, and transporting prisoners as required by law and the Sheriff
• Providing Court security and supervising civilian employees when necessary

The work involves protecting life and property, preventing and detecting crime, and maintaining law and order. Deputies may face personal danger and may work in plain clothes or uniform. Assignments are received from superior officers and must be carried out according to established rules and procedures. Deputies must act with good judgment in emergencies without direct supervision.

Requirements

• High school diploma or G.E.D. certificate
• Currently employed as a sworn law enforcement officer working 100+ hours per year with active certification
• Applicants from outside Nebraska must complete the Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center (NLETC) Reciprocity Course within one year of hiring
• Qualifying Military Police experience may be considered with supporting documentation
• Must be of good character with no demonstrated disregard of the law that would impair employment
• Must pass a background investigation

Physical Demands

• Vision: 20/20 uncorrected to 20/20 corrected, normal depth perception, no color blindness or permanent ocular abnormalities
• Hearing: Must understand frequencies of normal voice range
• No organic, active, or irreversible ear disease
• Must pass a physical examination by a designated physician

Additional Requirements

• Must be at least 21 years old at the time of certification from the NLETC
• Must possess a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's License at application, hire, and throughout employment
