Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent and one year experience in roads, parks, or grounds maintenance and/or repair; or any equivalent combination of related training and experience.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment physical examination is required before employment.
  • Must possess a valid State of Florida Class “B” Commercial Driver's license at time of employment.

Position Summary

This is responsible work supervising and coordinating the activities of a County employees, as well as inmate work crews, engaged in maintaining and repairing roadways, bridges, parks, and open spaces for the Alachua County Department of Public Works. An employee assigned to this classification functions as a crew leader for a small work crew performing a variety of routine maintenance and repair tasks related to road and construction and maintenance work and participating in the performance of those tasks.

Essential Job Functions

  • Directs inmate and employee work crews in hard labor, weed control, ditch cleaning, litter abatement, curb edging, etc.
  • Directs and participates in the work of inmate and employee crews engaged in the repair, erection or removal of ground structures as well as the clearing of road sides and hazardous corners.
  • Directs, oversees and participates in the work of inmate and employee work crews engaged in building manholes and headwalls; pouring concrete and catch basins; and street repair.
  • Directs, coordinates and participates in the work of inmate and employee work crews engaged in the construction and maintenance of park areas including routine gardening work not requiring specialized skills; replanting grass, spreading top soil and occasionally planting trees; picking up trash throughout the park areas, cleaning park roadways; construction of picnic shelters, playground equipment and other park facilities; underbrushing and tree trimming; painting and plumbing repairs.
  • Prepares reports on types of work performed by inmate and employee work crews, the materials used, employee sick and vacation records and other reports as required.
  • Responsible for crew performance meeting established quality and safety standards.
  • Provides hands-on training to inmate and employee labor crews in the proper use and operation of all equipment utilized under supervision of incumbent.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of the standard tools and practices used in general labor work.
  • Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards in laboring work and the necessity of safety precautions.
  • Knowledge of the methods of park and ground maintenance and construction.
  • Knowledge of current codes, ordinances and statutes.
  • Through Knowledge of Department of Corrections policies, rules and procedures as related to inmate work crews.
  • Skill in the use of common hand tools.
  • Ability to provide training to inmate and employee labor crews on current codes, ordinances, and statutes.
  • Ability to operate all machinery utilized under supervision of incumbent.
  • Ability to provide training to inmate and employee work crews in the proper use of equipment.
  • Ability to effectively plan, direct and coordinate the work of employee or inmate labor crews.
  • Ability to compile information and prepare reports.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Physical Demands

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.
  • The employee is frequently required to stand; walk, and use hands to finger, handle or feel.
  • The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; reach with hands and arms, and taste or smell.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

  • The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions.
  • The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts, and is occasionally exposed to wet, humid conditions (non-weather), and risk of electrical shock.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
