About the role

This class performs scientific and technical evaluations, assesses environmental conditions, and administers County environmental protection programs.

Responsibilities

  • Performs field assessments to determine levels of potentially harmful or adverse environmental conditions, horticulture, and/or hazardous waste, which involves: gathering physical data; conducting observations and making applicable field notes; collecting samples; performing community surveys; and/or, performing other related activities.
  • Receives, investigates, analyzes, and resolves a variety of environmental, construction, health, and/or illness issues and/or complaints related to assigned area of responsibility; recommends appropriate enforcement actions for non-compliant organizations.
  • Participates in a variety of environmental testing, sampling, and analysis activities in assigned area of responsibility; monitors data quality by ensuring compliance with quality assurance/control protocols.
  • Responds to inquiries and concerns from the public, other governmental agencies, internal departments, and/or other interested parties regarding environmental issues.
  • Reviews, prepares, and maintains a variety of reports, records, assessments, plans, and/or other scientific data; may submit reports and records to applicable Federal, state, and/or local governmental entities.
  • Participates in the evaluation and improvement of environmental programs; assists in developing plans, policies, and procedures.
  • Participates in monitoring and procuring supplies, equipment, and parts; ensures the proper calibration and use of applicable equipment.
  • Participates in/on a variety of meetings, professional and educational training sessions, committees, and/or task forces.
  • Affords assistance with budget preparation and administration; prepares cost estimates for budget recommendations; submits justifications for budget items; monitors and controls expenditures.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree with major coursework in an environmental or physical science or related field, and one to two years of experience in natural resources, solid waste, environmental soil, water, or marine management field; or
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent (G.E.D.) and seven to eight years of experience that includes technical work or code enforcement; or,
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

Licensing Requirements

  • SCUBA Diver Certification and Water Safety Certification if working in marine construction and artificial reef permitting and compliance;
  • Valid Florida boat operator’s license if performing marine or water quality work;
  • 40 Hour Hazardous Waste Operations & Emergency Response certification if working in hazardous or solid waste;
  • Valid driver’s license.

  • Physical Requirements: Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. Very Heavy Work: Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, work space restrictions, intense noises and travel.

Physical Requirements

  • Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
