About the role
A Deputy Sheriff is responsible for general law enforcement work, including keeping the peace, serving the public, protecting lives, rights, and property within Halifax County. Duties include responding to public calls, investigating complaints and criminal activity, traffic enforcement, serving civil and criminal process, developing suspects, arresting perpetrators, providing court security, transporting prisoners, and performing other special assignments as requested. Deputies must exercise sound judgment, make decisions in normal and emergency situations, and use discretion in carrying out tasks. Work is performed under the direct supervision of an assigned lieutenant and sergeant.
The applicant must be willing to work 12-hour rotating shifts, including holidays and weekends.
Responsibilities
- Respond to calls from the public and serve the community
- Investigate complaints and criminal activity
- Enforce traffic laws and regulations
- Serve civil and criminal process and other court-required documents
- Develop suspects and arrest perpetrators
- Provide security for the courts
- Transport prisoners
- Perform other special assignments as requested
Requirements
- Graduation from high school or GED
- At least 21 years of age
- Possess a valid North Carolina driver’s license
- United States citizenship
- Ability to obtain certification as a law enforcement officer in accordance with the North Carolina Sheriff’s Training and Standards Commission

Pay
The hiring range for this position is $55,302 - $61,848.
