About the Role

Under close supervision, and in a training capacity, this position is responsible for technical work of moderate difficulty in law enforcement or investigative duties. The Deputy Recruit is the trainee level for individuals who have not yet completed an Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (AZPOST) academy. Deputy Recruits work under the supervision of a training officer or academy staff, with work methods and results under constant review through observation, discussion, written and proficiency testing, and results achieved.

Upon successful completion of the academy and departmental approval, a Deputy Recruit may be promoted to the Deputy Sheriff class. Failure to successfully complete the academy and promote to Deputy Sheriff will result in termination from the Deputy Recruit classification, except under special circumstances.

Responsibilities

  • Attends and obtains certification from the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (AZPOST) academy to learn principles, methods, and techniques employed by the Deputy Sheriff class.
  • Attends indoor and outdoor classes and training sessions to prepare for duties as a Deputy Sheriff.
  • Performs rigorous physical training.
  • Learns to drive a motor vehicle safely under normal and emergency conditions.
  • Learns to demonstrate command presence in conflict situations.
  • Learns to write clear, comprehensive, and accurate reports with correct grammar and spelling.
  • Learns to understand, interpret, and apply criminal and civil laws.
  • Learns the use of various firearms and first aid methods.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Essential functions of this position include but are not limited to: driving; working with public officials, citizens, and staff; handling interruptions; writing; weapons qualifications; and telephone communication. May be exposed to extreme weather conditions, mechanical hazards, burns, electrical hazards, explosives, chemicals, heights, and adverse atmospheric conditions such as fumes, odors, dust, mist, and gases.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. citizen (Ariz. Admin. Code R13-04-105(A)(1) (2016)).
  • Must be 21 years of age at the time of appointment.
  • Must be a high school graduate (or possess a G.E.D.).
  • Must obtain certification from the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (AZPOST) within one year of employment.
  • Must pass the AZPOST-prescribed physical agility test.
  • Must obtain an Arizona driver’s license by the date of hire and maintain it throughout employment.
  • Must submit to a background search and successfully pass a drug screen, physical examination, and polygraph test prior to employment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • AZPOST Certification.
  • Law enforcement experience.
  • Detention experience.

The ideal candidate has solid experience in detention center operations, a disciplined military background, and practical law enforcement expertise. They bring strong situational awareness, proven reliability, and the ability to perform effectively in high-pressure environments.

Skills

Working knowledge of:

  • Relevant laws, rules, and regulations pertaining to law enforcement.
  • County geography.
  • Relevant laws, rules, and regulations pertaining to civil process.

Skill in:

  • Preparing and maintaining records and reports.

Ability to:

  • Effectively and safely handle and discharge a firearm.
  • Learn and apply law enforcement principles, rules, techniques, and the proper use of issued equipment.
  • Act quickly and calmly with proper judgment in emergency situations.
  • Work safely and support the culture of workplace safety.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, community groups, and the public.
  • Follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
