DEPUTY PROBATION OFFICER I (RESIDENTIAL TREATMENT/DETENTION SERVICES)

About the role

Probation Officer positions hold the status of sworn, Peace Officers in the Probation Department. Officers must be able to physically restrain combative youth. Residential Treatment Positions are responsible for performing the less difficult and less complex tasks associated with caseload management, dorm and facility security, supervision of work and fire suppression crews, and public relations and community liaison services. Detention Services Positions are responsible for assessing life skills, risks, and needs of probation youth, translating these into treatment objectives using evidence-based best practices, and counseling clients on conditions of probation and rehabilitation.

Responsibilities

• Provides for the care, safety and control of probation youth in a camp or a juvenile hall, maintaining group and individual behavioral standards.
• Observes and records the behavior and actions of individual probation youth and comforts or disciplines as necessary.
• Conducts the living group process, including proper supervision of probation youth eating, showering, using restroom facilities, visiting, and performing school and recreation activities.
• Develops and implements supervision programs for probation youth with the assistance of a Deputy Probation Officer II.
• Conducts recreational activities, provides individual and group crisis intervention, and ensures that the probation youth health needs are met and hygiene and personal appearances are adequate.
• Provides casework services to probation youth in a camp or juvenile hall, preparing petitions and court reports, evaluating and maintaining records on the progress of assigned cases, maintaining case records and logbooks.

Requirements

• A Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university.
• Must meet the qualifications for designation as a Peace Officer within the Probation Department, including, but not limited to: No felony convictions, work requirement, and meeting State-mandated CORE training requirements.
• Appointees will be required to meet State-mandated CORE training requirements as defined by Standards for Training in Corrections (STC) within one year of appointment.
• Positions to this class will be required to possess a certificate of completion of a 40-hour introductory training course on the laws of arrest under Penal Code Section 832 and Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST).
• A valid California Class C Driver License at time of appointment.
• Some positions may require a California Class B Driver License and/or specialized endorsement.
• Physical Class 4- Arduous: Frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working above ground on irregular surfaces.
• Veterans may be eligible for veteran's credit, which is an additional 10% of the total points added to a passing score.

Qualifications

• At least 21 years of age at the time of appointment.
• Must be legally authorized to work under federal law.
• Must meet all other eligibility criteria as outlined in the application materials.

• Knowledge of juvenile justice systems and best practices.
• Proficiency in computer software relevant to the job.

Pay

The salary range for this position is $60,000 - $70,000 annually, depending on experience and qualifications.

Schedule

Probation Officers typically work a standard 40-hour week, Monday through Friday, with some evening and weekend hours required.

Structured Interview

Candidates who pass the multiple choice and/or simulation assessment(s) will be required to participate in the structured interview in compliance with the California Code of Regulations, Board of State and Community Corrections Minimum Selection Standards (131).

Work Conditions

As Peace officers, under the authority cited above, sworn Probation staff may need to address an escape, maintain supervision needs or quell illegal activity. Such duties may involve physical use of force, including restraining youth and/or adults. Therefore, any Probation Peace Officer position duties must include the ability to perform physical restraints on any person under probation, mandatory supervision, or post release community supervision (i.e., Field or Institutions).

Background Investigation

A thorough background investigation will be conducted, which may include, but is not limited to, the following: Live Scan and Criminal Records Check, Polygraph Examination or Computer Voice Stress Analyzer Test, Psychological Examination, Medical and Drug Screening Examination, Credit Check, Physical Agility Examination.
