About the role

The City of Redmond is seeking a Deputy Police Chief to lead and oversee operations and staff for assigned divisions. The position requires strong leadership, discretion, and collaboration with various stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Acts on behalf of the Police Chief in carrying out departmental responsibilities.
  • Oversees and directs assigned divisions, ensuring compliance with departmental goals and regulations.
  • Develops and implements departmental budgets and manages financial resources.
  • Serves as a liaison between the department and local, state, and federal agencies.
  • Takes command responsibilities during critical incidents and collaborates with the Police Chief in strategic planning.
  • Manages staff through selection, training, evaluation, and disciplinary actions.
  • Communicates with the public and internal partners regarding departmental activities and initiatives.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of the department’s strategic direction.
  • Provides professional advice to city officials and participates in community meetings and regional committees.

Requirements

  • Seven years (ten years preferred) of progressive leadership experience in a public safety environment.
  • Three years (five years preferred) of progressive supervisory/managerial experience.
  • Advanced leadership knowledge and experience.
  • Basic Law Enforcement certification from the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission.
  • Law Enforcement Supervisor or Middle Management Certificate or equivalent.
  • Valid Washington State driver’s license.
  • Basic Law Enforcement certification from the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission.
  • Successfully qualified with the department issued handgun.
  • Meets the required physical and medical standards of all civil service requirements.

Qualifications

  • Education and experience: Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, public administration, or related field preferred; advanced degree desired.
  • Certificates or licenses such as FBI Academy, Drucker Executive Leadership Institute, PERF’s Senior Management Institute of Police, or similar preferred.

  • Ability to analyze and evaluate processes and systems.
  • Discretion and mediation skills.
  • Professional advice and problem-solving skills.
  • Working relationships with staff, departments, City Council, the Mayor, and the community.
  • Ability to manage critical incidents and criminal investigations.
