Deputy Fire Marshall - Downstate

Regular Full Time, exempt position within NYRA’s Security Department.

About the role

The Deputy Fire Marshal is a supervisory level position that assists the Senior Manager of Fire and Emergency Response in fire prevention, protection, and response. This role conducts and supervises routine and complaint inspections to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, NFPA standards, and New York State building codes. The Deputy Fire Marshal may review building plans for code compliance, respond to emergencies 24/7, and coordinate closely with NYRA’s Security Department to protect assets, employees, and patrons.

Responsibilities

• Patrol NYRA premises and perform fire inspections as required.
• Conduct fire prevention inspections of barns, grandstands, and dormitories.
• Supervise the inspection and maintenance of all firefighting and fire prevention equipment.
• Consult with NYRA officials regarding potential fire hazards and code requirements, including issuing Barn Area Violations for observed violations.
• Maintain and submit thorough incident reports to appropriate agencies following accidents or reportable events.
• Act as the primary safety liaison between NYRA, New York State OFPC, and local fire departments at assigned racetracks.
• Aid in the development of fire safety programs.
• Supervise semi-annual inspections of fire hydrants and sprinkler connections.
• Train NYRA Security and other personnel on evacuation plans for each facility.
• Assist as a member of the emergency fire response team prior to the arrival of the Fire Department.
• Coordinate with NYRA Facilities Department on maintenance of the Fire Alarm System.
• Supervise and review inspection paperwork and records of subordinate department members.
• Plan and implement required in-service training for members in core competencies of the department.
• Take corrective action to promote professional growth of subordinate members.
• Perform other assignments as requested by Senior Management.

Requirements

• Associate’s degree in Fire Science, Emergency Management, or related field. In lieu of degree, 4 years of demonstrated equivalent experience as a Fire Marshal, NYS Code Enforcement Official, Fire Prevention Officer, or equivalent functional experience may be considered.
• Minimum 2 years’ experience as a Fire Marshal, NYS Code Enforcement Official, Fire Prevention Officer, or equivalent functional experience.
• Minimum 7 years’ experience in fire/life safety-related emergency response or demonstrated equivalent functional experience.
• Knowledge of conducting thorough fire inspections and New York State Code Enforcement.
• Knowledge of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards (10, 13, 25, 72).
• NIMS 100, 200, 700, 800 certifications.
• American Heart Association (or equivalent) CPR/AED certification.
• Hazardous Materials Operations certification.
• Valid driver’s license from the state of legal residence.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite programs.

Preferred Qualifications

• Hazardous Materials Technician certification.
• Fire Inspector (NFPA, Pro-Board, or equivalent).
• Fire Investigator (Pro-Board, IAAI-CFI, or NAFI-CFEI).
• Fire Instructor 1 certification.
• NIMS 300, 400 certifications.
• Homeland Security Exercise and Evaluation Program (HSEEP) certification.
• Ability to review, understand, and interpret construction documents and architectural drawings.
• American Heart Association or equivalent CPR/AED Instructor certification.

Work Environment

Will work outside in all weather conditions.

Pay

$75,250–$86,000 per year.
