DEPUTY FIRE MARSHAL

Responsibilities

• Supervise, prioritize, coordinate, and assign the work of fire prevention personnel.
• Serve as liaison with other departments, bureau supervisors, partner jurisdictions, business owners, agencies, community groups, and the public.
• Develop and implement section goals and objectives.
• Analyze proposals for alternative methods of compliance for code intent and make recommendations to the Fire Marshal.
• Participate in special projects related to fire prevention activities.
• Review plans for compliance with local and state fire and life safety standards and regulations.
• Review, evaluate, process, and maintain files related to fire prevention.
• Consult with architects, builders, and developers on fire protection and life safety systems.
• Perform engineering evaluations regarding adequacy of existing and proposed fire protection systems.
• Conduct field inspections of more hazardous and complex occupancies.
• Investigate complaints involving violations of applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations.
• Recommend changes in design, construction, or installation of equipment based on analyses of present or potential fire and fire-related hazards.
• Recommend installation of firefighting facilities and fire alarm detection and extinguishing systems.
• Assist in enforcing fire codes and pursuing legal prosecution of violators.
• Prepare correspondence and written reports.
• Recommend changes in building and fire codes to the Fire Marshal.
• Respond to technical inquiries from employees, the public, public agencies, and consultants.
• Assist in planning fire protection programs.
• Perform other related duties as required.

Requirements

• A Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university with specialization in fire protection engineering or a closely related field (proof required).
• Four years of paid full-time equivalent professional engineering experience in fire protection, developing and maintaining a system for reviewing plans, specifications, and permit applications to ensure compliance with fire safety codes, regulations, and ordinances, building plan review, or a closely related profession.
• Additional related (paid full-time equivalent) experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
• Certification with International Code Council (ICC) as a Fire Plans Examiner (proof required).
• Proof of required documents (e.g., degree, transcripts) must be uploaded to the online application at the time of filing. Documents must contain the applicant's name or other identifying characteristics. Degrees must indicate the field of study, and transcripts must indicate the field of study and degree conferred date.
• Candidates with degrees from colleges or universities outside the United States must attach proof of educational equivalence at the time of filing.
• A valid driver's license must be submitted to the hiring department at the time of selection.

Skills

• Knowledge of California Building Code, California Fire Code, California Administrative Code, Health and Safety Code, and related standards.
• Willingness to work weekends, nights, holidays, and overtime as required.

Desirable Qualifications

• CA ICC Underground Storage Tank (UST) Certification.
• Bilingual skills in Spanish, Khmer, and/or Tagalog for positions interacting with the public.
